Laminate stock for my build needs a facelift

Well since it's for a little budget build in .284 Win...I'm posting my question here

I just got my Richard's Microfit Target thumbhole stock :rolleyes:

I don't know if it's good or bad, but I finally got it....(ordered in May)

Now I'm looking for suggestions on gunsmith that can finish the job on this one :D

Locally around GTA or within Canada Post borders, but would prefer suggestions for a local gunsmith that works with wood because I would like him to first see the "FIT" as it should be 98% or something like that, but my Stevens Long Action doesn't fit straight in it :ninja:

ps. will post the pics tomorrow, so that you can see how the stock looks when it comes from Richard's Microfit....
 
Chances are you are going to bed it anyway, just have someone with a mill open the action area up with a round bit to about .010 larger than the action and bed it.

Probably a lot cheaper this way as it would take several hours to get a proper fit to the wood me thinks.

Just make sure to keep the tang area at the proper height as the only wood the action should be resting on when bedded is the tang area.
 
I have used a few of these stocks and there is definitely alot of man hours ahead of you to get it fit as well as sanded down before you can finish.

Bedding will definitely be needed and adding pillars will not be a bad idea either.

In all likelihood, Richards generously supplied you with enough wood for about 1 1/2 stocks.
You might find it an educational project to fit and bed the barrelled action. If you are going to use bedding compound, you don't need a precision fit - you have to be able to support the barrelled action in the correct position, but you will want good clearance for the compound.
Once the barrelled action is bedded, start on the outside. You will likely need to do a fair bit of wood removal.

I'm actually contemplating about returning this one and getting one from SSS with 100% inletting and finished and ready to sand...:cool:

Oh yeah, it looks like a lot of work needs to be do to it, I imagined it being in a better shape...I mean tool mark all over (with worst across the wood grain) :owned:

Richards was VERY generous with the amount of wood they sent you.
I am sure a fine stock could emerge from that blank. But it is going to take a lot of work.
I have one of their stocks on my precision .308, and a LOT of chips were left on the floor.
 
I have the same stock but for the LA. These are never going to be criticised for flexing. Yep, you got lumber there. The inletting is about what was on mine. Most of that gets hidden or filled with bedding so it looks worse then it is. The big part is actually getting your action to drop into the inletting.

A bit of work and it will work out nicely.

I have shot some really nice groups with this stock so it does track nicely.

Well worth the effort and time...

I hear that they are alot of work... but I also hear that they end up nicely... I was thinking of getting one of their Thumb hole target models for a winter project...

What LOP did you get? How high is the "high cheek piece"?

LOP 14 2/4" :wave:

cheek-piece is about level with the top part of the stock....

It looks to be over my head in terms of finishing it up....I won't be able to mill the wood out.....and I'm not taking a chisel to it :slap:

Jerry what do you think about SSS HBR stock??? those are 100% drop-in with pillars and the whole nine yards???

If a guy is going to buy a Richard's stock, you should add the price of a decent set of files to the price. And a pile of sandpaper.

I think the quality of the actual laminate is good though, and they do have a lot of nice profiles to choose from.

I got that.....money can't buy me skillz :D
I guess I just hoped for less work, seems that the price should include competent gunsmith services to bed and to fit the action.

ps. I can pull the trigger, consistently :sniper:
 
You have a good nine months to make sawdust out of that stock before your stock will arrive from SSS.....ask me how I know :D

Fit and finish of the SSS is second to none....ready to finish bolt up and shoot but the wait is painful. I forgot I ordered one months before it arrived in the mail. I am waiting for one more parcel and then I will post pictures of everything just to poke Rishu Pepper in the side one more time before the year is over :cool:
