Laminated stocks for big bore rifles?

I can't seem to find a lot of discussion about this. Wouldn't a laminated stock prevent splitting and breaking on big bore rifles? Does anyone attest to the notion?
 
From a mechanical standpoint I do not think they are better than a quality walnut or synthetic at surviving heavy recoil. As the grain of laminate runs lengthwise, it would actually seem to contribute to splitting without proper cross lamination re-enforcement.
 
i think it would take a huge amout of abuse to split a laminate. all those layers impregnated with epoxy make for one strong heavy piece of wood. i think it might rival a well built composite stock for strenth. properly bedded i'm sure it would be stonger than any piece of walnut but there is a lot of big bores with walnut stocks out there.
 
as we are talking about stocks is there anyone in Canada making a stock with a thumbhole that will fit a browning that can handle 338 recoil. Lots in the states but they will break the bank in cost
 
Boyds in the States makes a Thumbhole sporter semiinlet unfinished for Browning A bolt under a $100, I have a Boyds featherweight Thumbhole on a Ruger 338,
 
I put up a WTB ad in the EE, looking for a replacement stock for an old pump 22, or any custom builders to chime in.

Got a picture? I've seen one pic of a split laminate stock on another forum. Further searches turned up that the gun had actually blown up.

Yep, found it after I posted.

So it seems like laminate stocks can split under recoil, from your and others' accounts here, and others I just found with a better search. I have a .375 H&H with a laminated stock. We'll see how it goes. :)
 
I wouldn't worry about it. There have been stock failures with all types of stocks. Make sure it is bedded properly and shoot it.
Remember also that a .375 doesn't recoil like the big bores.
 
Thanks, I've got a new Ruger RSM in .458 now split at the tang in its first four rounds, so I'm a bit leery. Need to talk to someone at Ruger about that.

Whole-heartedly agree that the .375 doesn't recoil like the big bores. :)
 
Did you get a hold of this guy yet? If you do let me know via pm. He makes a nice stock for sure but I cant track him down

And for the Op. i was told that laminate would not be a wise choice for my 510 Wells by my smith. I used an English walnut from a 460 wby for it. So far so good but weatherby pins the wrist and action from factory. My 458 Ruger split its stock twice and I am trying to get a laminate built.
 
I once had a Remington 660 in .350 Rem. Mag......it was the only 660 model with a laminated stock......the walnut stocks had a tendency to crack at the pistol grip and I presume that is why they used the laminated model....
 
I had a laminate stock on a XR100 that came out of the box split clean through the pistol grip. It broke across the grain.

The RSM was well known for stock breakage, something that was well-known at Ruger. A search on any of the big-bore forums will get you a few days of reading, history and suggestions.
 
When the laminate used in stocks is manufactured properly they are amounst the strongest stocks available = to the best synthetics made.

I have black/gray laminate stocks on most of my rifles now a few are 30-06/300RUM/375RUM/45-70.
 
My laminate stock on my .338 RUM has endured a lot of nasty weather and nasty recoil from 275 grain Swift A frame reloads and has nary a crack. Laminate is tough stuff.
