Lanchester Sight

... If my memory serves, the "Lanchester" was simply a copy of the early German SMG (MP ??? ) with a bronze magazine housing and bayonet "boss" to take the British 1907 ... maybe a view, copy or even an original ,could be found via the German version ?? ...... Only handled one once, and that was way back, just after the last Ice Age, and I think it had a rear sight similar, if not the same, as the SMLE No.3 ? Another source of info. could be Ian Skennerton / or one of his books, dealing with Commonwealth Military Weapons. .... Good luck with your search ! .... David K.

The Lanchester was a slightly modified version of the MP 28 II. The rear sight base does look similar to a SMLE base but there are differences, it was manufactured by Webb & Co.
I have been in contact with Ian Skennerton several times and he has no solid leads or clear pictures of an original and I am just seeing if somebody here has anything!

.. The one I handled/saw was part of the Royal Marines equipment/armoury on board HMS Newcastle, so, perhaps one of the UK Naval Base collections might show a decent picture ? .... Could you modify an SMLE sight to look OK in the meantime ? I assume you've checked all the usual sources, ie Numrich, IMA Sarco etc.etc.? ..... David K.

Have already been through the usual places and have had no luck. My contact at the Royal Armouries has had no luck either as the rifle was made by Sterling and they do not have a lot of the Sterling drawings or documents--yet.
I have already modified an SMLE sight based on the information I have but I am trying for 100% authenticity.

Anyone know of a source for a Lanchester SMG sight? Does anyone have good clear pictures of one?

I have a color picture here (in .pdf format) of a Lanchester that shows the front and rear sights semi-clearly, tho not really close-up. File size is only 86 Kb.

Is there anywhere in the forums that I can post it for you to download?

When you get your "Lanchester" sight mounted on, oh say maybe, an SMLE with a short .45ACP barrel, a modified trigger guard, M1911 magazine, and a fat barrel jacket - please let us know how it shoots.

You mean something like this?

Yes! So, how does it shoot? And you'd better say, 'loudly' so everyone understands the subtlties.

Homebuilt or bought already put together?
