Land!!!

Jessejames77,

1. Where are you? It would help the guys in the interior to know where a 10hr radius puts you, Chetwynd? Cranbrook? Kitimat?

2. try the Property Guys website. They have a lot of small parcels in the interior listed since they are a for sale by owner style service that makes more sense when your cabin on the Nazko hwy west of Quesnel is listed for $35,000 you don't want to have a realtor take a cut.

3. Look at 100 mile House and North and you'll notice a significant price drop in those little properties. Prices highly reflect whether or not you can drive from Vancouver after work Friday and get to bed before midnight.

4. I understand the desire for property but its a much bigger investment than a camper/wall tent/trailer. Do some exploring with an RV for a season or two before you pick a spot. Join a Rod and Gun Club/BCWF this will open up a bunch of contacts and also pave the way when cold calling other Rod and Gun Clubs which would be a great way to get info on a prospective area for a land purchase.

5. Again post your current location(doesn't have to be super specific just so we know where you're driving from), let us know what game you're after, let us know your preferred direction(North or East) and you'll get specific help.

6. Gravel or Pavement? Do you have a 4x4 or minivan? Around the Cariboo you can usually hit the Road then stop at Wal-mart or Save On Foods in town then take a paved road for 30mins to your good gravel road where your cabin is only 5 mins from the pavement. Or you can turn off the hwy an hour or two earlier then drive an hour or two down a muddy trail. These details can really help, and there are probably guys on here who could hook you up pretty quick if they had a better idea of where and what to recommend.

If you look hard enough in the right place you will find what you want.

I'm in edmonton.
Flying planes is not gonna happen.
Just looking for a few acres to take my kids to and enjoy outdoors.
Only thing I would need is some kind of road access. .dirt..wtvr.
Don't really like the idea of just random crown land adventures. ..the frustration of trying to find land I can shoot on etc is part of reason I want to buy my own land.

Btw, thanks to everyone who took time to give their 2 cents.

Ardent.....what airport is that photo taken at? I know I recognize it but just can't place it from your photo angle to the tower.

I was going to guess Wilga but the only other Wilga I have flown in was a 260 hp radial, didn't know they made them with Lycoming engines. That would be the same engine as in my Cherokee Six, IO-540. What is your fuel burn that you think it's so thirsty, mine is about 15 US gal/hr, which isn't bad at all, same as a 206 with the IO-520 and a lot better engine.
It must perform like crazy in that little airframe with the big wings and engine, in and out of all kinds of little potholes...........anyway enough about aircraft this is a "looking for recreational land" thread, sorry OP !!!

At the risk of a complete derailment, it does pretty well. Four seats and a generous cargo area, 400 liters of fuel. Visibility is unreal for a fixed wing.

Love the wilga!
Been eyeing them for a while. Prefer the round engine, but I'm sure yours is more user friendly. Certified?

Yep certified, she burns 80L/hr or 20g Doug, agreed it gets a lot worse in aviation, worst I've flown is 85 gallons an hour. I can get that back to 15g but I'm doing 80kts them, lots of drag. It gets off the water and climbs like nodoby's business. That's Pitt Meadows Doug, not sure how long it'll stay there, I'll be moving it North this spring, it's parked where I bought it at the moment.

The radial wbaad is a major pain. Low on power in this case, compressed air starter, hydraulic locking, and even more drag. The Lycoming is up 35hp and is a lot easier to start, keep running / maintain, and cruises faster and quieter. I love radials but the only one I'd own is a P&W in you know what.

As for the land versus nomad, and why I brought up a plane, I do them all. We do boats, from small river boats to 40' diesel, airplanes and tents, and I have hunting acreage on the Rockies foothills. Also do the outfitting area thing if that's another option to you. Out of all of those, you experience the most from flying in, as you are then in untouched wilderness. In BC boats can be a close second. There's something special about your own lake or cove and a tent in the utter middle of nowhere. Everybody is different but I hunted my acreage every year for a couple years, then I wanted to go somewhere new. I would build a primary residence on a gorgeous lake, absolutely, but my wife is too tied to her family and I can't blame her. Not that you'd necessarily want to, but could you write a book about back country travels over thirty years of fly in and boat in wilderness experiences? Likely. About 30 years of cabin visits.... Well... Just depends what you're after.

I don't know why I did not take up flying at an early age. I used to get to take the controls in the piper Cherokee my dad's buddy owned when I was barely into high school. Some of you pilots may know that guy , Doug Mcloud. he flew out of resolute bay for pretty much my whole life but is retired now. The other fella we grew up around planes with was down at the Vancouver airport, the late Fred May, who passed many years ago now. His beaver and twin otter were something else when we were kids. amazing guy and gone too soon. my dad used to take us to all the small airports when we were kids, I remember boundary bay airport from the 70's, every time I have a grape crush pop, that's where my mind takes me. My Dad went as far as his commercial pilots license but never did it for employment.
I missed or rather didn't take advantage of the world I was immersed in as a kid. I suppose it's not too late eh ? learn to fly and get me a little puddle jumper LOL

BC has so much crown land that you do not need much land just a good location as a jumping off point. Chilcotin Prairie and Cariboo area has very affordable property available. Check out Landquest.com. They offer recreational property all over BC. Give you a perspective on what's available. Out of Edmonton once you get out of the Park (Robson) you are coming towards McBride (Hwy 16) and some excellent hunting. Not big money there for property either.

I must admit I have bin thinking putting up a small cabin on the beach But I'm lucky it's a pian in the ass to get to Haida Gwaii but what a place to live
I bin watching for a couple of sea-cans to convert to a Quick cabin plus the added security Fore when I'm away working

I have excess to just about the entire Islands with the exeption of the parks and privet land of course
My house is getting bad from Mold and the lot is to wet to be worthwhile to renovate
I would be throwing money away and it's making a cabin on the beach is looking better all the time

I worked with Doug Mcloud in Iqaluit about 30 years ago. He used to own a super cub based at Pit Meadows if I recall correctly.
