FN America, LLC is pleased to announce that the FN 509 MRD-LE has been chosen by the Los Angeles Police Department as their new duty pistol. The FN 509 is a capable and versatile handgun platform that delivers rapid, precision fire in any environment. Officers training on marksmanship, tactical maneuvers and precision target engagements now have a more accurate and reliable sidearm, proven by the LAPD to perform with a wide variety of duty-rated handgun optics and ammunition.

During the LAPD handgun trials, FN competed against several contenders in a 20,000-round-count endurance qualification, which it surpassed with zero malfunctions.

LAPD needed the ability to quickly and securely mount a variety of duty-rated micro red dots to their service pistols to improve the accuracy potential of their handguns and their officers,” said Charles “Bucky” Mills, Sr. Director of Law Enforcement Sales for FN America, LLC. “FN pioneered the MRD mounting technology the LAPD required, enabling precision shot placement and immediate target engagement no matter the environment.”

Accuracy is further enhanced by the high-performance trigger assembly and cold-hammer forged barrel.

This thread will bring out the Glock fanboys and their counter cultured FN groupies.

Just reporting the news. When a major agency like LAPD (approx. 10,000 members) makes a change like this, it is bound to influence people. What is not clear in the article I saw was if the gun comes with a RDS or if one will be issued. However, why would they buy it if it is not their intention to issue RDS to the troops?

I'm a Glock guy (I guess?!) since my only handguns are Glocks. I think the 509 is sick tho! I would definitely get one if I could afford it.

I'm sure LAPD did their homework before giving that contract.

this is great for U.S. gun owners.the police trade in their guns and are sold by companies like AIM surplus and RECOIL gunworks.
i see right now gen 5's glocks going on sale now.

People who love Glocks have obviously never held and shot anything else :) don't get me wrong I have a 17 Gen 5 but I bought it because I have a FX-9 first and so had a ton of mags. Compared to my P226 or CZ it is not even a contender in comfort of shootability. Sure it goes bang but so do my Sig and CZ

It seems LAPD is joining the trend to move from the .40 to 9mm as the last issue gun was Glock 22. Also, the possible use of an RDS on an patrol weapon.

LAPD also allowed "grandfathering" of previously issued weapons in the past, not sure if the still allow this as it would be a nightmare for the logistics, and armourers to manage 10,000 members with a variety of duty weapons and calibers carried.

Without seeing the Request for Proposals, it is hard to know what the factors were that went into the selection.

I've never really understood these threads, is it some type of choice validation thing? Why would anyone in Canada care what the LAPD issue?

Only that it gives credibility and assurance that it is reliable and a good design. Endorsements (by adoption of the model) do mean a lot coming from a huge agency.

It will be interesting to see how many of these pistols get rolled out to the LAPD. There are a lot of old dogs that won't be switching over. But hope fully some of the older duty guns make it to the used market. I would love to own a LAPD S&W 4506. Wishful thinking.

Lapd members can pick what pistol they carry after the academy and the caliber they use I’ve seen glocks M&P beretta and some units can use 1911
While in the academy they will have to use whatever is issued to them and then after academy they do a bunch of training on what they will be carrying

At the moment they are issued a Glock 19 at the academy. There is a list of approved duty guns including but not limited to; Glock, Kimber, Smith and Wesson, Beretta, et al.

I don't have a FN 509 MRD-LE, but if I did I'd do an underwater test, and a just-out-of-the-water test.

Surely the LAPD would have done that.

It’s hard to wrong with any of the flag ship striker fired polymer handguns. At the end of the day I’m sure the decision was based mostly on more mundane stuff like cost, supply abilities, warranties and manufacturer support during the lifetime of the contract.

I have many glocks they were the #### back in the day but fn 509 is a better gun as are others such as sig 320 beretta apx.
