Lapping in a set of rings

Just a quick question. How many people out there have actually checked a set of rings once they were mounted for alignment or lapped them in?

Is it common to see alot of inconsistency in the alignment of the ring bores?

Yes, I just compleated mounting a Leupold VX II on Rem 700 SPS DM 30-06. I use a Wheeler scope mounting kit, it works excellent. I was quite supprised to see how little the rings engaged the scope before lapping, and had I not used the alignment tool The rings would have been out horizontally by 1mm.

I allways lap the rings with my own made lapping kit, some rings are better than others but out of 100's I did none been perfect jet....
