I need to lap my 30mm rings. I have the lapping bar, but do not know what kind of lapping compound to use. Any suggestions of what compound and where to get it?
Thanks

Try heading to a local automotive supply store, and picking up a little Fine Valve Lapping compound.

JB will work but I don't think we live long enough   to see the effects other then a polishing.

Valve lapping compound will work fine as well.

JB compound is incapable of removing any steel..... it would act as a lubricant and you would have to spend hours rubbing steel against steel trying to lap the rings.

With valve grinding compound it should only take a few minutes.

An easy test to see how JB is not abrasive to steel...... take an old piece of barrel... measure the diameter at a certain spot that so you can duplicate the measurement. You need to be able to measure to one ten thousands of an inch. Now start rubbing that spot with JB on a soft clean cloth. After doing this for an hour or so, measure that spot again. It will not have changed. You can to that all day long, over and over...

Thanks agin for all the sugestions, I could not find JB, but used valve compound from Parts Source, and it worked great, nice fit, and smooth finish.

Its amazing the poor quality of rings out there I just finnished last night doing 5 guns for friends and one of my own. I had 30mm Hart rings I put on my 700 rem 7mmwsm they where the best of them all only took a lttle time my brothers took over a hour steel very hard.and badly shaped. The unite I bought has two grits they supplyed 320 grit for alunimum & 240grit for steel
good luck

Would you guys lap Near mfg rings?

Absolutely if there was evidence of misalignment - Re-base. In the best of cases, slight lapping of multiple components is required.

Haven't seen any forsale by the current suppliers. Its a job for the machine shop or you may be able to get a bar from on the metal supermarket or Russells etc..

35mm rings

I have 35 mm rings on my new IOR, I had to get my brother in law to machine me a 35mm bar as no commercial alternative exists

Yes - I was worried that in the metric Canada well like most things we pretend to be, but N.A. Industry or the big guys (USA) just aren't listening..........

Going by a picture of one I've seen in an old Russels catalogue, these look to be roughly 300 mm long with 1mm circumferential channels cut at 30mm intervals. Does this sound about right?

I have a local machine shop making me one, or rather starting to. I've given them a general plan and picture of the thing taken from Brownell's website. Can you advise to what tolerances the bar must be made ? Can it just be turned or must it be ground ?

Thanx
