It's finally time for me to start reloading. I have a ATRS Modern Hunter in .308win (18.6" barrel) on the way & .308 match ammo is expensive!!! In fact all .308 ammo seems expensive to me, I'm just stepping up from mil-surp rifles that shoot cheap stuff!

After doing a lot of reading about reloading (internet & books) it sounds to me like Lapua Brass is about the best out there. My Question is which Lapua .308 brass to buy? They list two on their website .308win brass and .308win Palma brass?

I'd like to know if anyone has any experience they can share. From reading on the net some say the Palma is better, some say they can't see a difference in accuracy between the two.

Or am I just over thinking this? And should just buy the regular Lapua brass.

Thanks in Advance!

congrats on the new rifle, I bet the new rifle will digest anything you feed it . before investing in expensive brass you should probably start out with some cheap stuff and see how it goes. work up some good loads for everyday target practice, then move into the good stuff for precision shooting.

Here is an article with lot of info, just like German's other articles

He is one of the writers I believe in coz he has practical knowledge of long range shooting

Palma brass uses small rifle primers, it lasts longer for those of us pushing things a little harder than normal for competition mainly, to me that's the #1 reason for using it. Not possible accuracy or this or that, just brass life at higher pressures in rifles made for handling it. I don't shoot in winter so I don't really care if it truly makes a possible difference in ignition or not. Most with ignition issues usually have a rifle/weak firing pin issue more than anything else.

No such thing as Palma brass. That's Lapua's marketing types making stuff up. Palma is a course of fire involving 155 grain bullets, big heavy(14 pounds or so) single shot, target rifles and 1,000 yards.
Wouldn't bother with match ammo for an 18.5" rifle myself. Too much velocity loss. Wouldn't buy over priced brass just for the name either.

This is, in fact, wrong. Lapua does sell a "308 Palma" brass. The obvious difference is that they use a small rifle primer instead of the large rifle primer.

Lapua Palma brass was the latest and greatest thing that a few thought would be required to win the Palma Trophy at the last Palma Match. Many teams drank the purple kool-aid. The winners of the Palma Match was the team from Great Britain, they used Berdan primed brass that they sold for scrap after the match in Brisbane Australia.

By all means get yourself some regular Lapua brass, it is worth every penny.
