LAR 15 mags vs all others.

Thinking about picking up a stack of mags for my First AR. Why do some people get the 5/30 pinned mags when the 10 rounders are available. Is it a reliability thing or just a cool factor?

The 30-rounders are generally more reliable and durable. Those that run their rifles in competition are generally used to the standard metal or polymer magazines. There's certainly a cool factor, as well. Most black rifle owners have a mix of both. But why limit yourself to 10 when we can now have 16...

For just static target shooting, I tend to use the LAR mags. For tactical stuff, I tend to start off with the LAR mags, and reload with PMags...

So I picked up some LAR 15 Mags today based on the advice, I figure I can buy magpul/GI mags after I get the new toy out to the range. But I'm gonna put some .50 Beowulf Mags on order for my future .50 Beowulf build

The 10 round mags are shorter and can't be used as a monopod while prone, or held while shooting from kneeling or standing. The AR15 rifle was designed to be shot with 20-30 round mags.

Haha, some people are getting 18 in if they precisely locate the rivet at 5.9 rounds of .50 Beowulf. I personally will be happy to have a mag that runs 15 rounds reliably....and even happier if someone invents a .50 Beowulf handgun and markets it here.

There have been the occasional feeding issue @ 18-rounds, which is why I'm saying 16. That's the number that reliably loads on a closed bolt.

Most AR owners I know, and this includes myself, like the full sized mags for training, though the weight is still a bit lighter (5 rds vs. 30 rds). That it's pinned is unfortunate but it does force you to conduct reloads more often.

For the need to shoot more out of one mag I just use the CMMG .22LR conversion. The short length of the LAR 15 just throws me off. My hand-eye is too dumb to adjust, lol.

IMO, the ergonomics of an AR mean that the real training comes in the manipulation of the firearm vs. rounds downrange, and .223 ain't cheap for me. Of course, I'm talking duty training or competition style shooting. For plain plinking fun, I do have an LAR mag because I can. YMMV.
