Has any one enlarged the rear sight aperture on there norinco 305 or installed an XS Sights type rear sight? I like the ability to change the rear aperture on the AR type rifles and was wondering if it would speed up follow up shots?

Enlarging it would be easy. I find it too big already and would like something smaller.
Got me to thinking though. An antique Winchester my father owned had a flip up third aperture sight for long range shots.

On some of my shorties,
especially the ones where the aperture was not drilled dead center in the rear peep, I enlarge the hole. More hole than steel surrounding it.

Sort of a "ghost ring", like the old .303 Lee Enfield jungle carbine rear peep sight.

Very quick, but obviously not as accurate for precision work.

Since I had my old eyeballs lazered ten years ago,
I don't shoot as well with a rear peep sight as I used to.

In most cases, prefer a quick removable low powered scope on my shorties.

the lazering changes the way me eyes see through a peep sight.

the front sight is now blurry, and it "wiggles" from side to side.

for me, scopes are now my preferred sight,

PS: your night vision may also be affected .... I lost about 20 %.

However,
having 20/20 most of the time is FANTASTIC,
AND I'D DO IT ALL OVER AGIN.

Get another aperture unit, alter it, and see how it works for you. What works for one person may not for another.
A NM aperture is smaller.
A small aperture tends to improve focus of the front sight, which can be an advantage, depending on a person's vision.
With my eyes, a "ghost ring", or an open sight on the barrel are absolutely useless. I can use a small aperture, but prefer a scope.

Laser affects people differently. Depends on what had to be done to get the person to 20/20. I had Lasik and no problems for me. Can use irons all day long at 200 and 300.

You could drill and tap it for Williams apertures. Then you can remove it and have a large ghost ring, and reinstall it and have a couple of different smaller apertures. I was also thinking of just drilling out the centre of an allen head capscrew and using that. It looks just like a national match rear sight.

M14 and M1 Garand rear apertures are easy to buy/source. Drill it larger like Lazerus2K says and see what works for you. Easy to sell it on the EE Forum if it cannot improve things. Have fun with the addiction! :D

Cheers,
Barney
