I’m not sure if this has been asked before, but are there any air guns in large bore that shoot under
500 FPS and are therefore PAL exempt?
Thanks in advance
John

There may be a couple on the market, but generally airgunners rebuild using a popular platform like the 2240 as the basis for such things, buying a .30" or larger barrel and otherwise modifying components to arrive at a sub-500fps airgun shooting a much heavier, larger pellet, slug, or ball. I haven't kept up with developments on this front but if you visit airgunforum.ca you should be able to learn what's available.

I'm not sure if you are looking for a rifle or a pistol but Hatsan makes a .30 caliber break barrel that is apparently pretty good and just under the 500fps.

An airgun testing such that at least 1 of the 2 limits is below the limits is not considered a firearm for purposes of sale. For other purposes under the law, such as use in commission of a crime, every airgun or replica is considered a firearm regardless of power/speed.

My Brother had a Weihrauch HW85 with a 25 caliber barrel, it shot under 500 fps. Velocities were much higher with 177 and 22 cal barrels though. I purchased the rifle from him but sold the barrel before trying it out. I was much more interested in high velocity.
D&L Airgun may still sell the individual barrel spares. Looking on their website most rifles are out of stock if you give them a call they may be able to get you an HW80 in .25 under 500 fps in the next order who knows.

I acquired from a member on here a heavily modified crisman 100? (Granddaddy of the 2240) with a qz breech and barrel in .30cal. Around 420fps with a good thwack on target. I gave it to my dad as he doesn't have a PAL and had a squirrel problem. I have been thinking lately about what to trade him toget it back.

Considering the new proposed law last Thursday from our illustrious prime minister Justin Castro... *ahem*... Trudeau... It seems I'll have to adjust the above statement. Airsoft, NERF, water pistols, and in fact anything which looks like it was designed to kill people in the shortest amount of time is now illegal. Period.

Well screw him..

If it's not a replica that looks similar to banned guns, a large bore airgun with a MV under 500 fps doesn't require a PAL. As an example, a .30 or .50 cal airgun that has an MV no more than 500 fps is okay. I seem to recall these were available from the CAF store in the form of Hatsan PCP pistols and rifles. The trouble is finding such airguns today. It's probably because the market for them is too small to warrant the trouble of getting manufacturers to detune some models. There are still available new detuned Weihrauch PCP's in .22 that don't require a PAL, but at prices beginning at just over $1300 it's clear they are not for the faint hearted.

I believe D and L airgun will detune most PAL rated airguns for you then they mark the serial number starting with a D for detuned. I had a Weirauch 80 done up this way from them.
Not sure if they can detune say a Sam Yang but never hurts to call them and ask.

You seem to be going to a lot of effort to get a sub 500 FPS gun. It would probably be less work and be more fun to go get your PAL. It's not hard to do and it can be fun too. Once you have it there would be no looking around for someone to de-tune a gun each time you buy one, just get what you want, simple.
