I'm talking African game such as Elephants Rhino's Hippo's Water buffalo.

What happens with the meat?
I am not opposed to any type of hunting unless it is illegal or hurting the population that is being hunted.

I hear people say "i can't believe someone would shoot an elephant"

I don't have a response because I am not educated about the specifics.

I just assume that Africa has a very good conservation program for these animals and therefore the population would allow for such hunting.

Anyone care fill me in on this?

They eat them. Hell they eat the guts, and some of the contents too. I don't know at what point in a buffalo's digestive tract grass quits being grass and starts being ####, but they push the limit. ;)

The PH that we are hunting with has set a program up with a local village and school where he supplies the lunch meal for the kids every day and if there is left over meat, it goes to the village. For many of these school kids, it's the only protein they get in their diet. In a continent where starvation is still a major cause of death, you can bet nothing goes to waste.

Elephant trunk steak is tasty. Looks like grilled donuts;)

I found elephant tasted like tough beef, but then again beef would be tough if you were eating it before the butchering was done. The thyroid gland is pretty good. Never got to try the trunk.

Crocodile is very good, I could eat that everyday.

There are guys here with personal experience, but from what I understand the meat pretty much all goes for camp meat or to local villagers, no waste. As for populations most of the big game over there is well managed. For most of the last 100 years the governments have actually had to employ game rangers to keep the populations in control. I would suspect conditions very from region to region based on what sort of government controls are in place, if any. If you can get a license it's a good bet there is a healthy population.

I was in Namibia this year and witnessed the need for meat first hand. We took a sample of meat off all our animals and the rest was allotted to the local villagers. When we approached a village the whole population came out and the Induna (chief) would come out and shake my hand and say thank you for the meat. There was NO waste at all. When I shot my Cape Buffalo the only thing left after was a spot of blood and the grass out of the stomach. They even scooped up the jelled blood from the cavity.
My outfitter had an agreement with the local conservancy to harvest a specific number of animals which included trophy animals and non trophy animals, including cow elephants, just to supply the locals with meat.

Also worth mentioning is that in places where elephant are sport hunted they are massively over populated. Hunting gives them a cash value an dincentive to protect them (rather than poach them for the ivory or bush meat). Money goes back to the communities through the conservancy and the meat is all hacked up and distributed amongst all who show up. I've heard this is a real mélée from a PH I talked to. He doesn't even stick around once they get started - it's that crazy!

Ya one's four posts up;). Seriously You come back to the sight of a kill the next day you better have left something tied to a tree cause you wont even know an animal died there. Hardly even a sh1t stain and there aint no PH's gotta arrange no maple leaf processing type deal. It'll just get sucked up by locals
