Large Gun sight Info Needed !!

It has a crosshair and in varible. What was it attached to ?

Anyone know what the paint markings mean ?

Is it work $249 (damm thrift shops )
I really think its cool but google tells me that some are worth $200+ others exactly the same are worth $33 so I'm lost. It would look great in my room but I'm not going to wayyy over pay.

Ottway sight

Ottway and Company sights were made mostly for Naval Guns aboard the smaller ships that used direct sighting methods. That is, Corvettes, Destroyers, Submarine Chasers, and Auxillary vessels. Brass is better for these applications.

Larger ships, such as Cruisers and Battleships had more sophisticated fire control and sighting methods.

Ottway, along with Ross and other optical device makers made these sights, binoculars, telescopes, and other items. It should have a broad arrow and model number along with a serial number stamped on it.

In my opinion, it is not worth $250. It is not really useable for a gun sight, unless you have a Gunboat handy, as it is designed to have a heavy solid mount that you can adjust, and that mount is attached to the Naval Gun itself.

If you look on E-bay, you will see them advertised for sale quite often. There are more suitable telescopes, such as the Signals, the Observers and the Regimental telescopes that were designed for Army land use. The Canadian CKC (Kodak) Pattern 373 Naval Telescope shows up for sale sometimes, and is usually about $150 - a much nicer telescope, and designed for people, not large calibre guns.
