Last weekend I took my latest .45Colt SAA out shooting and the firing pin is hitting the primers very hard almost poking a hole in them, the metal from the primers sticks out and makes indexing to the next round difficult because the primers drag on the recoil shield.
I am wondering if the large pistol primers that I am using (CCI #300) are too soft for use in this gun, they work great in my other one.
Has anyone heard of "hard" primers as a possible fix for this problem??
Any input much appreciated.

It sounds to me like your loads are on the light side. When the primer fires, it moves out of the primer pocket towards the firing pin, and when the cartridge's powder charge fires, typically the brass is driven rearward, fully re-seating the primer in the primer pocket. But with a light load, the primer is not fully seated by the rearward thrust of the cartridge case, and will drag on the recoil shield as you describe. This condition can become extreme when a primer propelled wax or rubber bullet is fired, the solution here is to drill out the flash-hole, and mark the cartridge so it is not used for conventional loads.

Is this a new patch of primers? I bought some CCI 300 recently and they seem to be a little tough to get them to fully seated. Are they seating fully?

Are you using the same brass? I know some brands of brass (notably S&B) have tighter primer pockets than North American brands.

I took the gun out to the range again last weekend this time using some factory .45 Colt and had the same problem. After careful examination of the gun it turns out the recoil shield area is pounded in which allows the primer to fill in the void and when rotated it scrapes along the remaining shield area. There is a small disc inset into the frame right where the hammer comes through the frame, I am thinking if I replace this disc with hardened steel the problem will go away.
