I was just about to reload 200 pcs. of 30-06 Springfield ammo using IMR 4350 powder, i just noticed i run out of large rifle primers, I have 1000 Winchester primers for large pistol/magnum loads, my question is can I use this in replacement for large rifle primers, and did somebody already tried thisÉ

Personaly I would not sugest it, with the understanding that you want to load full power "J" word loads! If on the other hand you went in a more realistic direction and followed the silver stream and shot cast loads from your '06 a reduced powder charge and a large pistol primer might just be the ticket. Just my .02 YMMV. Aside from all that just check in your loading manuals, I trust that you have several ( to cross reference powder charges ) look to see how much higher the chamber pressures are between a large magnum pistol load and a standard lr load. may be a great investment in time to buy a couple of " good books " and spend some quality time reading.

It's my understanding that pistol primers have thinner cups than rifle primers
as handguns generally don't whack the primer as hard as a rifle might.
Not to mention that rifle primers have to handle at least 20000 psi more.
I have tried Federal pistol primers in my 22 hornet and the primer cup was pierced.

pierced primers and slam fires on semis can result.

X2 on that.

I've used large magnum pistol primers in the 30-30, 303Brit and 300 Savage. This was back in the late sixties when getting components wasn't always a given and I was to short of funds to buy more than one box of a hundred primers.

I did try them in 30-06 with cast lead loads with no issues as well.

Now, when the first SKS rifles were coming into Canada, from China, way back when, I ran out of standard primers and needed a bunch for a military rifle shoot the next morning.

As Can Am stated, pierced primers and 2-3 burst slam fires happened enough in the first 10 rounds (we could legally do that then) to turn me into a spectator and range officer for the rest of the shoot.
