Large Rifle vs Large Rifle Magnum

If you're useing ball powders the magnum primers are usually reccomended. For all of my "hunting" loads, I use magnum primers for everthing. I'm not reccomending that you do what I do, but neither I nor any of my shooting buds that follow the same practice have had any problems. For my milsurps, I normally use non magnum primers along wth the extruded powders that they were mostly loaded with, BL-C, though originally loaded with standard primers, I use magnum primers with it as it is a ball powder and does seem to be more consistant with magnum primers. bearhunter
 
If you are at top end loads, then I woud drop down and work up again wiht the magnum primers.

Actualy, whenever you change anything, you shoudl drop down and work back up, to be on the safe side...
 
In chronoing handgun loads I have found no difference in using magnum vs regular primers. As somebdoy has mentioned if you are below maximums you should be OK. If I am on the line the I always backdown before moving to the edge of maximum. That said it has been years since I pushed the outer edges of posted maximum manual loads. Didn't do anything for me but to shorten brass life and hurt my shoulder. Better accuracy in my guns when I slowed it down a bit.

I have played with both, sometimes my best load for a non magum has come with magum primers. IN fact I now start on a new 270 with a magnum primer.
make sure you work back up with the different primer.
 
My personal criteria on the use of LRM primers is.
If the powder charge consists of more than 55gr. of 4350 or slower powder, if your using ball or sperical powder, or if you intend to use the load in colder than freezing temperatures. and as others have stated if you change any component in your reloading receipe back off and re start your load evaluation.
Of course your milage may very.
 
When I lived down south and could buy primers easily, I would just use magnums when the powder load exceeded 50.0 grs, or if I was going to be shooting in sub-zero weather. Now it's easier to just buy magnum primers, and use them for everything that needs a large rifle primer - except my match ammo.
