Hi all,

Sorry about the noob question.

I am in the process of trying to buy my first box of primers and some tools, and I see on many items "Small Rifle" and "Large Rifle".

What is the cutoff line/distinction between small rifle and large rifle?

What are my Winchester 670 30-06 Bolt and my Remington 700 308 Bolt considered?

Regards

Both rifles are "large rifle" primers. Yomamma is correct in that you'd best read up with a good manual and/or sit down with an experienced mentor to walk you through the processes. First and foremost, educate yourself!

Pretty much all .30-06 is going to be large rifle primer.
99.999999999% of .308 is also going to be large rifle primer. Only a very few type of specialist match/competition .308 brass (often called "Palma Match") are going to use small rifle primers. You are very unlikely to come across any unless you buy it specifically.

A manual can't always tell you the primer size because some brands use different sized primers for the same cartridge. 6.8 SPC and 7.62x39mm for example can be made for either small or large rifle primers. For .30-06 and .308 though it's practically a guarantee that they will use large rifle.

Pistol primers are almost the same dimensions (they are the same diameter in both cases but the large variety is shorter/thinner for pistol than large rifle) but are built differently for weaker firing pin springs and lower pressure so shouldn't be used in a rifle.

Since there are only two diameters it becomes easy to just look at them and check. If you have any .223 cases lying around, they'll be small rifle primers for reference.

Thanks all,

Yes I am reading and watching youtube on them internets. I just was a little confused on the terminology and where it applies to. I am also starting to buy the basics online because I actually have nothing here yet to compare to, so getting the right stuff the first time is cool too. It never hurts to double check here on the site.
