Large ring Mauser

Not real certain that "small ring" actually used except when discussing the 1.300" diameter Mauser 93/95/96 rifles versus the larger 1.410 diameter of the 98's. Often "small ring" goes with no third bolt lug and #### on closing; whereas "large ring" often goes with third "safety" lug on bolt and #### on opening. I suspect a lot of other rifles have front receiver diameters similar - Rem 788 and 700 is 1.348" -ish, P14 was 1.360"-ish Gets somewhat confusing with Mauser "small ring" 98's which have third safety lug and #### on opening, but with 1.300" diameter receiver...

The 1640 is a small ring is it not? Thanks

Yes, it's a small ring. It's NOT a M98 though. It carries more features of the M94/96/38 than M98. The 1640 action have the breeching system of the M/94/96/38 action, means it uses a stepped shoulder on the barrel sitting at the end of the front action ring. The bolt, itself, uses the front lugs of the M/94/96/38.
They copied the '98 lenght (to handle the '06 lenght), they added a third rear lug, they remodeled the gas venting capability - by adding an angled cut for the ejector bolt bolt release - and they streamlined a M98 bolt shroud

The M/98 have a different breeching system as per the barrel shank sits on an shoulder inside the action. The gas venting system is also slightly different.

The SM 98 are not many.
You can pretty much list it as ;

Brno;
VZ-24
VZ-33
VZ-47
Mod. 21/22
ZG-47

Erfert (Danzig);

KAR 98

Oberndorf Mauser;

Commercial action

KURZ;

Commercial actions

FN;

Mexican Mauser

Husqvarna;

1640 (and the 1900)

Pre-98 Mausers

M 93/95

m 94/96/38

All the above use the same barrel shank of .980"

All except the following have shorter magazine of 3.314", the following have a 3.400" magazine;

HVA 1640 and their later FN M98, ZG-47

The Pre-98 actions also have shorter magazines;

M 93-95 uses 3.125" magazines while the M/94/96/38 have a 3.240" one...
