So I purchased a Vortex CrossfireII 4-12x50 and mounted it on my Axis 243 rifle. used low rings with the objective about 1/4 " above the barrel. I usually laser bore my optics at 10 yds in house with the laser on the bullseye and my crosshairs about 1.5" above that. No problems with my other rifles and scopes. With this setup trying to get anywhere above the bore impact spot I run out of elevation clicks and the windage is also affected. I can get impact or where the bore laser sight is but no further. I had the objective set at infinity and the other set at 4x. Do I have to try to set this up at the range and set at 50'?? Not sure what I'm doing wrong. What concept am I missing?

Let me get this straight: You are saying that you have adjustment range BELOW where the laser is pointed, but not ABOVE? I would start with trying things at a longer distance, but it sounds like something might be canting the scope. Any chance you're using a 20 or 30moa rail, or perhaps rings with offset inserts?

When you max the elevation on a cheap scope it'll also mess with the windage, because it can only go up so much before it is constrained left-to-right as well - its a tube within a tube, you can't go all the way UP and OVER at the same time.

Yes I can't get above the bore laser impact at 10 yds. My bases are the factory Savave Axis II bases. Scope is leveled properly and not canted. Rings might be the problem but now Im thinking base issues. Hope it's not a defective scope. I think it's me just not getting it with this setup.

Pics of the mounts and scope might help.

Do you have another scope you can try in the same rings? If another scope has the exact same issue that would at least narrow down the cause.

Have you tried sand bagging the rifle, removing the bolt, and lining the bore with a spot on the wall?

I never really liked using lasers, as if the collet isn't right it can be actually off bore.

Yeah, I never bothered with a laser either. I figure its just one more possible thing to give me grief. Being in the city its always a bit sketchy trying to boresight a rifle beyond the confines of ones home, but my cat broke a few slats on my blinds which has given me a perfect little hole to do that sort of thing while the blinds are closed lol

I do my 'laser thing' in the evenings in my back yard. With nearby garages and sheds I have a 'somewhat visibly-hidden' shooting line and about 20 yds to the far corner of my yard for targets. Evening also gives me 'shadowed site' for the target for better visibility. OR I can shoot out the other end of 'my line', going across the street to a neighbor's shed at about 50yds. Again, evening so I can see the laser dot.

Thanks for all of the responses I appreciate them all. Taking it down tomorrow to Ramakkos to have a pro check it out. I'll follow up on it once I get the answer.

Alot of the scopes I use don't focus at short range. I could go out in the back yard and set a target at 25 to bore, but easier just to get to the range plop a target a 10 yards and shoot a round. Then adjust and move out farther. Joys of living soo close.

I replaced the bases on mine. Factory base top was cut off to one side. Anyone I know with an Axis replaces the two mounts with a rail.

This is good advice. The factory bases do not give a lot of flexibility when mounting a scope, and on the 2 Axis I've put scopes on you couldn't put the scope far enough back for proper eye relief with the factory mounts. A 1 piece rail solved this issue for me.

That as also another issue I had with the bases. I like my scopes back farther than most people. I bought it to try out 6.5 Creedmore. Cheap rifle that shoots very well. I also wanted a rifle that I wouldn’t worry about scratching up around the farm.

Don’t think pointing a firearm at night across a street with a laser is a great idea. Someone else could also see the laser and then you’ll be noticing little coloured dots dancing around on you. Compliments of your local ERU

I'm Not standing in my Front or Back yard aiming at anything. I'm in my shed, in the evening when a tiny red lite on a target object is not very noticeable and there is No fog to 'expose' the laser beam. Not like in the movies with red lines running around. I have a very secluded 'back yard' anyway, only a couple sight lines I easily avoid.

I don't bother with laser bore sighters, preferring to align the bore and crosshairs at 100m, by looking down the bore. That being said, I have seen multiple low end Vortex scopes with issues.

yep so I took it to the shop and my scope guy put new rings on just a touch higher and laser bored but out to about 50 yards. That was my issue, cheap rings and trying to sight in this scope too close. So it is good enough right now to get me on paper. All's well. Thanks for all the responses. each one gave me something to ponder.

So it probably would have zeroed without having to buy new rings. Why I don't buy these bore sighters.

I bore sight at 100 yards for windage only and just start on paper at 15 yards. Maybe that's wasteful of ammo, not sure. A few shots to set windage, and at same time get elevation dialed in enough to take it out further.

That is a waste of ammunition. I look down the bore at a target at 100m, to align the bore and crosshairs at 100m, and I fire my first shot at 100m. Then I make a rough scope adjustment, and fire a three shot group. Then I make a fine scope adjustment if required, and fire a group to comfirm. So basically 7 shots total.
