Laser in IPSC Open Division

After reading through this thread, I do not think he has thought about the safety requirements of using laser sights. There has been a number of incidents with laser pointers and aircraft. Now we have to go out and buy new safety glasses that protect our eyes from lasers.
Just because it can be done does not mean you should do it either. Mind you it does look cool on TV and in movies.

I was tempted to try that for some circumstances. Last Manitoba Nationals had lots of targets that were set low behind a high wall or port and was sometimes difficult to get the sights between your eyes and the target. I don't think it's workable as a primary sight for IPSC but might be ok as a supplementary sight....hasn't been a big enough deal to bother spending the money on.

Thats an intriguing thought, my open gun used to have a dot and irons, never thought of interchanging or removing components to suite the stage.

I've played with lasers on an AR. Even used one in a night shoot. Just my humble observations..
Lasers are useless in bright daylight which is when most matches occur. If a laser is your sole method of aiming, forget it!
With movement and heavy breathing, the dot moves way too much esp for 10-15yd handgun shots, easily the difference between a A and a C Zone hit.
In a night shoot, the laser is quite beautiful to behold for a spectator! With the smoke from firing, the beams look exactly like the movies. The problem is the beam width increases for distant targets up to 100m ( in our match) and makes hits on 8-12" plates difficult. The other thing is if you also use a RDS, the laser is co-witnessed with it. You cannot see a laser with the RDS on while looking through the glass. I shot the entire match just using the RDS and never noticed the laser beam at all even though it was on.
Just my observations...

The only person I know of that was successful with a laser attached to his gun was a cop named Marion Cobretti.
Bad guys were the disease, and he was the cure......
