Looking at getting one. Any thoughts on the Nikon pro-line series? Seem reasonaly priced. Never ever used one before so I'd appreciate any input on the matter.

Regards,

I have an older Bushnell and a newish Leupold, my buddy has a Nikon. They all work well, but I find that they're most useful for just practicing range estimation. Make your best guestimate, then check with the laser to see how close you were to the correct yardage. Do this a few thousand times and you get really good at estimating. They're also good if you are shooting from a fixed position or stand. Range lots of landmarks in sight, then when a critter shows up you probably have a good reference point to estimate his range by eye.

I don't think I've ever actually pointed at and ranged an animal.

Depending on budget, Newcon are cheap for their power/range. The glass are not super and the reticle is not illuminated so in low-light it becomes almost useless. I could show you mine Boomer.

Are other brands reticle illuminated?

Leupold 1500. It ranges 1250 yards further than I can comfortably shoot. I guess a lesser brand would do, but I have to keep up with my elitest / poseur stature.

Please pass the Grey Poupon Dijon mustard.....LOL

Forget all the rest and buy Newcon..awesome and will out range anything on the market hands down. Leica 1600 even falls short i am afraid. Look them up and save some money by doing it twice.

I've ranged 1997 yards repeatable on a target with my Leica 1600 on a sunny day. It is light and compact so it actually goes with me in the field. No problem ranging game either from gophers to sheep. Best to try the model you are interested first on the stuff you will be ranging, especially if you are trying to save a few bucks. Some of the cheaper ones range fine on cloudy days on big targets. Just my 5 cents
