Since i just saw a post about a Griffon Kennel from QC, i tought it would be interresting to post 3 videos of some of my last fall woodcock hunting. The first two is with my older english setter, third is my youngest that was 9 months old at the moment.

He used to be perfectly steady in training, but when we hunt i'm a bit loosy with corrections ;)

Hunting in hard cover, missed a lot of shots but was still really fun:

I will work the steadyness this spring with this young fella.

That sure is some thick cover, but I suppose you hunt them where they are found.
Hunting over dogs is lots of fun and yes, One in hand is worth more than two in the bush, lol.
I too would have had to purchase much restrain in not popping that second bird while the dog was searching for the downed bird.
Great Job and Hope the training isnt to hard on you this Spring.

Ah yes - neck deep in prickly ash (you probably don't have that scourge where you are) and wild grape vines. You can't even move your shotgun let alone swing it. Exposed roots and boot-sucking mud make every step a struggle. "Why the #### am in here again?" And then the beeper goes off and 1, 2, 3 of the little buggers pop up, and in an instant those thoughts are wiped from the board.

Remember hunting them rather successfully along the tiny creek beds and swampy areas overgrown with super thick tag alders. Just black mud on the ground and you would know they either had been there or still are by the pencil shaped round holes in the mud and splotches of white bird poo. They would invariably flush and go straight up, just above the tops of the alders and then level out, skimming the tops. So much fun and very tasty moist dark meat. Take me home country roads man. Good times.
