Yesterday night after supper, went with my son driving in a few concessions in Prescott Russel ( near the house ), saw a big tom at the end of the corn field, we waited 15 minutes and saw it roosted itself in a huge tree... It is getting close, only the sound of the bird flying up sure got me ... Looking forward for... JP.

Also looking forward to the season opening in Ontario. Could be challenging if the weather continues as warm and the hens are bred and toms less interested in coming to a call. Long range forecast looks colder though. Closest I've been to a turkey this year was yesterday on the way home from the cottage honking the horn to get a hen off hwy 35.

I've been seeing them around the Bourget-Hammond area all winter long but now that the snow is gone there are a lot more sparse. I have a small private hunting land in Bourget that had a decent size herd but I havn't seen them in the last couple of weeks. They better be around come end of April.

LOL.... they don't migrate.... they just scatter.... If the were there all winter they will be around in spring, you'll just have to find them is all... they will be in smaller groups and pairs....

I drive up from Cornwall area to Russell several times weekly. Been seeing a lot of birds, far more than I recall from previous years. I'm don't hunt myself, but looks like it is going to be a good turkey season.

I know they don't migrate. It's just that everyday I would pass by and they would be in the same spot, but now that the snow is gone I havn't seen them.

I'm assuming since the snow is gone the food is easier to come by for them so they don't venture out has much.

I'm still new to this hunt and still learning alot on this bird. I only started hunting last september and have yet to nab my first turkey. I'm hoping this spring hunt will be a successful one

Good luck Pat.... where are you located?....

I live in Rockland, but me and my buddy have access to a small hobby farm in the Bourget area that grows some wheat for the horse so the turkeys are often in the wheat field.

My in-laws are in Hammond (right next to Bourget) and have seen some turkeys, but I have yet to go speak to the farmer that owns the field behind there house, it's on my to do list before the hunt starts.

Nice.... do you guys plan to team up and call some in? One caller one shooter?...

We havn't really planned that yet. We started scouting this weekend and will do so til the hunt. We'll plan a bit more when we know there patterns a bit more.

Last year we had set up at each end of the field (on the same side, not facing each other LOL). We didn't know by which way they entered the field so we had both sides covered. Now we know they usually enter by the North so we'll probably change our plans and take that into considerations.

We also bought some decoys. We have 1 tom decoy and 3 hen decoys. We'll set up the decoys in a advantageous spot near our blind.

We are more ready now then last year. Last year we received our lisences in September so we didn't think we would be able to make the fall hunt. But now we stocked up on equipment and studied the bird so we should be ready.

I also read your thread many times looking for tips and ways we could improve our chances.

Lot's of info in that thread.... quite a few knowledgeable folks chimed in there.... my only suggestion is to keep it simple for now... practice a few of the necessary calls and get good at them.....

I have a box call and have been practicing the assembly call, cluck and the yelp. I have tried a diaphragm call but can't do it. I tried for hours several times and I keep gagging and can't get any calls to come out of it. The only call I get is a laugh from the wife. I expected that since I can't wear mouth guards while playing hockey.

So i'll keep it simple with the box call.

Thanks for the tips and info

P.S to the Op, sorry for the thread jack

I did not call it yesterday as i did not want to give away my sound because it is one of the field i got permission, it was a real biggy, could be a boss, from what i could see in the bino the beard was 12-13 and i could clearly see the huge spurs, it could be my opening day bird... JP

I am the same... Suck with mouth calls... You should get more than one box so you can "change your tune"... Also try pot calls...

The mouth call is the call but i always carry my paddle box and my fighting purr, did not use them for years but you never know when they will come handy... JP.

My wife took away my diaphram calls before I hurt myself:redface:

I've been hunting for 30+ years but we only had turkeys in my area the last couple seasons in Kazabazua (West Quebec). Last year was my first turkey hunt and I fell in love with it, what a rush!

Why don't the experienced turkey hunters start a thread with one new post a day on tips/advice or stories, something to keep us all even more crazy till the season starts.

My apologies for thread jacking, but the season is near and sanity is far. LOL
