I'm often asked, what is the smallest caliber handgun you trust to protect yourself?

My personal favorite bear defense gun has always been a Beretta Jetfire in .22 short!

I've found over the years that when hiking in bear country I never leave without my Beretta in my pocket.

Of course we all know the first rule when hiking in the wilderness is to use the "Buddy System". For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this, it means you NEVER hike alone, you bring a friend or companion, even an in-law, that way if something happens there is someone to go get help.

I remember one time hiking with my ex girl friend, Crazy Barbara, in Waterton National Park, in Southern Alberta.

Out of nowhere came this huge Mama grizzly bear and she was MAD! We must have gotten too close near to Mama grizzly's cubs and she charged at us.

Anyway if I had not had my little Jetfire close at hand, I'd sure not be here today.

That's right. It just took one shot to Barbara's right knee, and I was able to escape by just walking at a brisk pace.

That's one of the best pistols in my collection!

Probably Sumerian or Mesopotamian in origin.

Hahahahahahahahaha! :D

It's scribed in the third quadrindt, second row below the section on making corn based pancake batter.

Love it. :D
Kinda like when I was out hiking with the wife and we saw a Grizzly up the trail. I stopped, sat down, took off my hiking boots and put on my runners. Wife says "What ya' doin, ya can't out run a Grizzly ?" I replied, "I only have to outrun you". :D
All joking aside tho', a true story: We were hiking across the river from our cabin and we did see a young Grizzly looking at us so we backed up towards the River. Wife leads us to one particular spot where the water is quite deep and I said "I can't cross there, I can't swim." Wife, a strong swimmer, smiles and says "I know that."

A .410 with 2 3/4inch #8 shot works the best for bears... and only carry one shell. That's all you need.

The last word probably goes something like this, 'Ooops! Missed! Aaaaaargh.........' (RIP)

A variation goes like this, 'Wha ...!!! One shot from my hyper-magnum wasn't the last word! Aaaaargh ......' (RIP)

Actually, those are last words. The very last word is probably 'Aaaaargh ......' (RIP)

A fellow by the name of Gary Shelton who many consider one of the top experts in the field of bear defence says in one of his books that after testing many weapons in stress situations that the one least prone to problems like jambing up when the panic is on is the Remington 870 police 12ga with slugs. His #1 choice weapon to have in his hands if being charged by an angry Grizzly.
This fellow makes his living giving seminars and bear defence training to people who work in the woods like loggers, surveyors ect.
