Well, we didn't need a FOI request to answer the question. Just ask on CGN!
I thought (logicly... oops) that the information as to who requested the info/possesed the antique would become obsolete as soon as it was written.
Anyway it seems like a waste of time and taxpayers money, considering how many people admit to getting letters for guns they don't even own. Add to that, some antiques share 'serial' numbers, like Remington Derringers and Swede rolling blocks.

Mooncoon's idea of a database of antiques in ciculation is possible, I guess. Note to self: Get to work on the tinfoil hats.

So I wonder about the antiques imported without any letters? Do you think Customs notifies CFC and they attach a note to our file?
A certain number of antiques are not even opened @ Customs.

I will always get a RCMP Letter on any expensive gun i Import.
Just less Customs Hassel.

As to Customs not Opening Antique guns..... IF they come thru Quebec Customs about 1 in 5 get Opened.
I have had maby 1 in 25 not get opened in Vancouver Customs there very carefull in Vancouver for some reason or just work harder LOL.
I dont care if they Open them its the Rotten Taxes i hate.
 
Because of where I am every gun ive brought up from the US has come through Vancouver...Every single one of them has been opened.

...on the other hand, Ive only ever had to pay taxes one one of them...of course it was the most expensive one I had ever bought.

If I even order a bag of black English flints from the states the package is inspected at least once....
Ive not had 1 bloody thing get through the border without a inspection,

Im ok with that, I just wish they would take the time to repack everything properly.

It dont Mater WHERE in Canada you are Sportee eventully you will have a gun come thru Missasaga or Quebec.

You just aint bought enough guns yet. ;)

Its all to do with Where they are Mailed from in the USA and the Flight connections type of Service there shipped be it Reg Parcel or Priority International or Expessmail International.

Im way over on VI B.C and i get guns come from Texas thru Quebec all the time. Mainly as of Late for some reason.
Guns mailed from WI in the USA tend to come thru Vancouver all the time and like i said Always opened and taxed UNLESS it goes thru Van customs on a Weekend then for some weird reason NO Taxes.
I always cross my fingers for the Weekend Crew :)

The Higher the Declared Value the more likely they are to Tax it it seems.

A letter dosn't MAKE the gun an antique. There is no requirement for a letter.
An antique gun is simply one that fits the description. The CC says nothing about a letter, IIRC.

Exactly! I imported the antiques w/o being accompanied by the letters, and with letters. The presence of the letter just seems to make things a bit quicker, as they just phone the number on the letter more readily and verify information more willingly. W/o the letters they just seem to waste more time inside the customs office going round and around.

There is absolutely no mention of the antique letters anywhere in the law, so technically the letters used to be sent out when the guns were UNREGISTERED after they were found to be antique. The CFC just DOES NOT MIND to send us a letter if we want, nothing more nothing less.
 
I have imported one without a letter. But I included the FRT listing for the gun and luckily the FRT had a picture that matched. The letter only makes it easier. It is not a requirement.

I tried to get a letter for the gun below, from the RCMP and while they agreed that it was a flintlock, said that they could not say it was not modern because it did not have a manufacturers name on it. I suppose if I stamped Joseph Manton on the barrel they would have been happy. :>) :>( I am sure the gun was made in Spain in the late 1700s because of maker's marks on the barrel. I brought it through Customs by hand accompanied by a copy of the pertinent pages of the Statutes of Canada. Canada Customs reluctantly let it through because they felt it could not be shot.
Point is that letters for original muzzle loaders are dependant on essentially being high end pieces with recognized maker's names on them. Common garden variety unnamed guns will probably be declared modern by the RCMP and decided on the basis of personal belief by the Customs agent who views it. Incidentally CC told me I had to get its age declared by the local chief of police when I enquired by phone. Also a letter with the letterhead of an established antique dealer is considered proof under the Customs Act as I read it.

Mooncoon, that is one wicked looking piece! I can see why customs reluctantly let it through ..... it looks exactly like the kind of weapon the gang members in Toronto like to use in fire fights.

There are quite a few folks jumping in about the antque letter thing...I guess Ive got to go back and say this again...


...THE ANTIQUE LETTER IS NOT REQUIRED...


The CFC never said that it was!
