The launchers Colin is referring to are specifically chambered in a proprietary "37mm Rebated Rim" caliber which has only ever been loaded for low-impact charges like flares, riot batons, pepperballs and other less-lethals. Hence why these have thus far escaped the 2020 OIC as they were not considered standard firearms to begin with.

Yup, I see where i was confused.

The OIC is referring to the "37mm Rimmed"

Whereas the Exempted launchers are "37mm Rebated Rim"

It's just over 4ft/lbs, and yes I would wholly agree. The RCMP think so as well hence why all of the 40x46mm aka "40mm NATO" launchers were prohibited by the OIC.

As exploding ammo is prohibited in Canada, the only ammo options for the 40mm are MIL chalk rounds and home brewed solids and chalk rounds. Not exactly the sort of thing that's gonna be used to commit crimes. But hey, let's not allow any fun stuff for anyone.

While it seems unlikely, the real 40mm launchers use aluminum barrels and the round is very low pressure overall, so it's not outside the realm of possibility. I'll let someone else take the first few shots, though.

The problem is the airsoft ones have zero way to actually fire a real 40mm round. The have a simple plunger that opens a valve in the bottom of the airsoft cartridge. One would have to build a firing mechanism from scratch.

I'd assume the locking latch would fail before the barrel bursts. The one I bought out of curiosity is a very low grade aluminum. Most components are metal injection molded.
