Laurentian Wildlife - canned hunts...

It always amazes me how some people feel that money can buy them prestige in the hunting world. How the devil can you claim to be the "Geat hunter " when all you did is spend a pile of cash to shoot a domestic animal.

.

A little off topic, but there are plenty of public land hunters that believe they are gods gift because they have shot a big deer/elk/moose etc.

They forget that it was the deer that did the hard work of antler growing and predator dodging for many years.;)

Not meaning to insult. My point was that your boar hunt may have been an huge physical challenge but any harvesting of animals in an area that does not allow them to completely escape is not hunting. This activity has its place but it cannot be compared to truly fair chase hunting.

I agree that sometimes a Sask. deer hunt can be over quite quickly. My first hunt here some 25 years ago lasted 20 minutes. However, while at times it seems easy it is definitely not a guarantee of success. Goodness knows I've spent many a day not pulling a trigger.

Again I am sorry if my tone may have been a bit insulting but I have to stick to my argument that shooting animals in any form of enclosure where they cannot escape regardless of its size is not hunting.

I also agree with gatehouse on how some fellas act like Gods gift to the sport because they lucked into a big set of horns. I tend to listen to guys who can feed me venison rather than b**ll sh*t

Watched a Musk Ox hunt on TV ,The ox had the whole of the arctic to escape no fences there.
The animals all bunched up for safety, the hunter choose which one to shoot.(rifle 50 yards approx)
I would rather see a hunt on a fenced acreage, than that bs.
The shooter jumped around like it was the toughest thing he had ever done, bad scene in my opinion.

Although I've never hunted muskox, what I understand is that the actual killing of the animal is anticlimatic, like cougar hunting with hounds.

The entire Arctic experience of muskox hunting must be incredible though.

Having been there and done that, I can attest to the fact that sleeping in a tiny tent in -40 degree temperatures with no heat and searching for days for musk ox in frigid temperatures on the barren tundra was a bit tougher than a canned hunt. The problem with television hunts is they can only capture a tiny portion of the hunt and as most people want to see the kill, that's the portion that is focused on. I'd rate my musk ox hunt right up at the top of my favourite hunts. It was challenging, demanding and I got to share the hunt with one of the community elders whoes stories I could have listened to for days!

Think about it this way, how challenging does it look to shoot a whitetail from a treestand on television? You rarely get to see all the time and effort that went into those few minutes of the kill that they show on television. It's just something that you are more familiar with a can appreciate what it took to get there. For those that aren't familiar wth it, it likely looks as easy as the musk ox hunt did to you.

The kill is rarely that difficult in any situation....whitetail grazing in an alfalfa field, elk bugled in to 20 yards, sheep sleeping in afternoon sun....just point and click. It's what it takes to get there that defines the hunt and sadly, that's where many canned hunts are lacking.

Have you done a muskox hunt????? Evidently not. They don't always form the classic "defense circle", believe me.

Have not hunted Musk Ox. Bearkilr Convince me how tough it was.The show I saw showed hunters on snowmobiles, find the Ox and shoot it.
I have not Hunted caribou and I am sure it it as difficult as shooting a cow in the field.
I am not against any hunting style you wish to participate in .I am saying I am sure some fenced hunts are as difficult or some times more than some fair chase hunts.

I meet a PH one time years back and he was telling us all about his hippo hunt.
I was a few beers in and said how is it done.
We float down the river in a boat,we see a hippo sleeping in the sun,get out of boat, stalk the sleeping hippo, shoot it behind the ear before it wakes up.
I asked why?

CROWCA- I agree wholeheartedly on the fenced hunt, they are not all easy and some more difficult than a fair chase hunt for some species.

Basically, muskox hunting is braving the elements and finding them. I went on an early April hunt, 140 miles on an open sled behind a snowmobile in -30 C temps with a 40km/h wind. Once we did find them, they ran a long way, repeatedly. As per Nunavut law, the last mile stalking has to be done on foot(several times in my case). It was an experience I'll never forget. I'm sure some have an easy muskox hunt as well, since I believe now you don't have the "last mile stalk rule" anymore.

I would never put a negative spin on any legal hunting/shooting activity, and most hunters should follow this, I believe. United we stand, divided we fall.
Merry Christmas!

I guess the question begs asking then.....how is shooting a deer on an agricultural field or a trail in the woods from a stand any different than shooting a cow in a field? Sometimes kills come easy and sometimes they require tons of work.......regardless of what you are hunting....

Not that it really matters but it does irk me a bit sometimes when people belittle things I've worked extremely hard for....I've backpacked caribou for miles after walking for days to locate them and I've spent days in sub zero temps hunting musk ox and to me that means a lot.......and for someone with zero experience to totally belittle that seems a bit rude....I've also driven my truck out to the farm I hunt and walked a hundred yards and killed a deer. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you work your ass off. People with a lot of experience in the field can relate I'm sure.....those without likely can't.

I'm sure the methods of one PH don't represent the entire style of hunting for all hippo hunts but that does sound like an interesting way to hunt. I'm sure floating down an African river holds a few surprises, let alone the entire adventure of hunting there! I respect that it might not be for you....hopefully you respect those that it is for...:)

Probably because it's safer than hunting them on land, getting in between them and their water:)

Still, if you want to do that, then that is available. Expect an adrenaline rush!

Sheephunter why do you feel I am belittling your hunt.
I stated what I viewed on TV and to me it was BS.
I also agree with you that shooting and killing most animals is not that difficult, not much harder than shooting a cow.
As hunters we want to make things seem harder than they really are.
I have never Hunted either species you are talking about does that make me an inexperience hunter?
I would not spend any funds on shooting ether species, any Hunts I have seen on TV did not seem that interesting or difficult to me.
They were as difficult in my opinion as shooting a fenced animal.

Books or articles on hunting generally portray the actual hunt much better than TV shows. Those 1/2 hour shows are meant to sensationalize the hunt, and no doubt they'd lose all of their audience if they showed every hour of the hunts.

However, not having hunted neither muskox nor hippo does make you inexperienced in that field, as I'm inexperienced in hunting many animals such as elephants, lions, grizzlies, etc. Don't make negative comments until you've been on the hunt yourself.

I am not allowed to comment on anything, I have not done yet,I am sure you talk about space are you an astronaut?

So by your logic no one should comment on a canned or fenced hunt unless you have done it.

I have been on pheasant hunts the birds are not wild, but most of the pheasant hunting here is like that.

I have been deer hunting on an Island with more deer than you can count, killing one is like shooting a cow in a field.

My opinion is just that a opinion, why should yours be more important than mine or anyone else's?

Please use my entire post not just what you want to pull out of it to suit your needs.

As for not showing the hunt in its entirety, the hunters left camp in boat crossed the lake saw some caribou, got out of boat climbed small hill, big caribou missed about three times, finally killed it,tough hunt not really.
Show up at lodge 5000 acres climb tree, see lots of deer, missed first shot get on second tough hunt not really.
Both about the same to me.
