LAV NightHawk Vickers Tactical gun

KH and LAV did not get final say on the Hk45 - HK went their own way. Hk45 has some flaws - fixable - but KH feel the MP45 is a better option. LAV will use the gun that his students use --

Pics of the sights?

Maybe I'm not understanding what is so great about this. It looks like any other 1911. There is a nice story that goes with the gun, but stories aren't verifiable, and I don't buy stories in general, I buy guns. I don't mean to offend. But can you explain the awe to me?

If you do not know who Larry Vickers is, he is a former Delta force operator who is very well known for his pistol training and for his expertise with the 1911.

He is a very sought after trainer and 1911 builder, if you could talk him into building one for you, you had in excess of a 5 year waiting period, rumor was that he would only build 10-12 pistols a year and only for people he liked.

The one you see in the picture is a Nighthawk Custom that was built with Larry's permission as a collaberation and that one was actually his if I am correct, KevinB can confirm this?

Now compairing a Vickers built gun, or Nighthawk Vickers to any other big name gun and saying it is better is premature. Builders like Wayne Novak, Les Baer, Bill Wilson, Mark Kreds, Bill Laughridge and Ed Brown build guns every bit as good.

Roger - I understood the only public release Nigthhawks started at 025 serial number.

FYI Ken Hackathorn gave me his Nighthawk hat -- I was not sure if I should be tickled pink or just an example of he and Larry divesting themselves from Nigthhawk...

One of the forums has somthing about LAV no longer approving of NH.
It had to do with Lav feeling that NH was charging too much for the Vickers
line pistols that Lav himself didnt work on personally. There was also hints that He (Lav) felt the quality in parts and workmanship on the pistols were slipping.
Another thread also touched on it but that it was just a matter of a deal that the pistols were only supposed be a limited run on the line.
Dont know what part or any of is fact just an FYI

Clob,

Fact is Both Ken and Larry withdrew from Nigthhawk. Larry had mentiomned last year that he had decided to do that, as he felt the gun was not a representative of a good value for customers, and he did not want to associate his name with it.

I took a brief look at LAV and Ken's 1911's they had on TD1 - Larry kept a 1911 throughout the last class, but Ken went back to the M&P45.

Pistols built by Les Baer
are at least 3 classes above the rest of that herd.

Also, IMO, Wilson does not belong in that list.
Just remember that almost anybody can buy articles in almost any magazines (including but not limited to Guns and Ammo)
at a price of about 55-80K per page ;)

Why in hell Nighthawk would sh!t where they eat is beyond me. Having those guys on board is a huge marketing tool. They had a vested interest in keeping quality and value high. Yet this type of thing happens over and over in this industry. Question: If you had to pick a current 1911 what would you pick?

Kevin,

There's going to be a Canadian distributor for Ed Brown pistols in the new year, what do you think of their Special Forces or Kobra pistols? I had a look around 10-8, but didn't find much.

I have owned 1911's built by all of the above and a few others in that range, and I agree that Wilson is way over rated, as is his service, but my Novak Colt and my C&S Para were every bit as good as my TR Special.

WC is way overated -- their parts are good - but their guns are production.

In reality most of the name brand plates are no longer custom places - but creative production guns.

I will admit I had bad luck with a Les Baer gun, so I am not a big big fan.

Mark Krebbs guns are very very impressive.

A gun handbuilt by LAV, is a piece of artwork -- mine is just a Nighthakw pre-production model that he worked on - its like its on ball bearings.

FYI Joe Bonar's sone left Novak's (now I have forgotten his name) and is doing his own 1911's - and they are very nice.

Kevin, I have to say your NH/Vickers is more then "just" a production model that he worked on, that is one sweet 1911.

My Novak 1911 was built by Joe and I sold it about 2 weeks before he got killed, I wish I had of kept that gun.

Dustin?? I spoke to both he and his dad a couple of times, both real nece guys to deal with. It was a shame about Joe - I did the same kind of thing, sold a CZ75 that he had installed a set of Novak sights on about 4 months before he passed away and been kicking myself ever since...
