Just a short note to say that I will NOT be posting as much M14 noise in the Battle Rifle section as I used too, because, when it comes to the M14 type rifles, I've simply BTDT too many times. When it ain't fun any more, it is time to rotate your vices ... nothing sadder than a man who rode a good vice all the way down, right into the ground.
Time to move on.

In fact, my favorite battle rifle has always been the original AI Dutch Built Sudanese and Portuguese AR 10 rifles. The M14s were always my second choice, and I only turned to them after the AR series became restricted, and parts for the original AR 10s dried up. I have spent a lot of time with the M14 rifles [ like 20 years with over a hundred personally owned 14s, GI, SA, and Chinese ... and some interesting half breeds ], trying to turn the M14 into a system that handles as well, balances as well, and has the almost perfect ergonomics that the AR series display. I've come close with some of my shorty M14s, and am currently involved in a couple of M14 Munimula stock projects, that may actually succeed.

I have been waiting patiently for someone to build a modern/new design AR 10 that would be as reliable as the old Dutch built ARs of the 60s.
Eventually, I gave up on waiting for my idea of the perfect 7.62 NATO NEW version AR 10, and have decided to concentrate my rifle activities on the AR 15, in some of the interesting new calibers that they are cramming into this smaller, lighter platform.

I finally went over to the Dark Side.

Maybe some day, we may see some repros of the old Dutch AR 10s. I like the appearance of those, right behind that of both the M14 and FAL.
 
It's not April 1 is it ? I fully appreciate the fact that a man has to have fun in his work or move on, but it is guys like you Laz and M14 Doctor and the few others who have created the market for the M-14 in Canada. Without guys like you, how many Norcs do you think people would have bought before they got tired of a new gun that barely works out of the box? You few guys have allowed thousands of shooters in Canada to have a really cool gun to play with as opposed to a few hundred disgruntled shooters who bought these less than perfect Chicom knock- offs. On the other hand, aren't the AR-15's already BTD ? I hope you continue to work on the M-14's but I will keep a lookout for your next interesting projects. I am sure they will be innovative or else why repeat what everyone else is doing. Keep us posted.

the only thing I've been drinking is the special egg nog my wife gives me to keep me calm this time of the year.

And yes,
I've BTDT with the ARs ...
3 dozen or so Dutch 10s,
about 3 dozen personal AR 15 builds,
and few other AR 15s that found their way in to the gun locker on a trade.
BUT,
my main reason for despising the poodle shooter, was always the yippy little caliber, not the gun itself ...
even though I still have a couple of thou 5.56 Green Tips and .223 Zombi loads around for 2012.

Now, with the maturity of the AR 15 system and the availability of real, manly calibers like
6.8 Super Powerful Clobberer
6.5 Grumpy
and the MONSTER 12 ga slug equivalents,
the AR 15 seems more worthy of my attention.

Especially with 2012 and the hordes of Zombis we can expect to try and swim over here to Vancouver Island.

AND,
even though I've BTDT with the Ruger Minimally Powerful 14, and Mostly Inaccurate .30, the new 6.8 Ruger is sort of sneaking into my want list.

So a street legal Ruger in 6.8, and a matching 6.8 AR 15, with various other top ends in .22 LR and good ol' .223 poodle zapper, seems like a new fun direction to head off into.

Or maybe I'm just getting too old and worn out to shoot a manly caliber like 7.62 NATO ...
well maybe not, cause I still got a few hundred rounds of the big stuff ... for the Zombi Grizzley Bars that may swim over from the mainland.

I spent a few decades messing with ARs and they are fun. Good luck to you Laz.



EDIT:
I have attempted a few returns to the dark side, but once you have
immersed yourself in the M14 ... it's kinda hard to go back to the AR.

I even looked at the larger caliber versions of the AR and decided that
the .45-70 Marlin lever gun was a much better choice for my needs.

I am one of those guys who owns an M14 because of guys like you , Laz. The information you and a few of the other guys have posted inspired me to get into shooting and buy an M14, and I'm so glad I did. I just love it; so much so that I've had my grand-kids (9,11,12) at the range several times this past year. The first thing they say when they come for a visit is "Can we go to the rifle range soon?" We always have "safety first" attitude and the little guys are well versed in range-rules, and have turned out to be pretty damn good shots. I started them off with a .22, eventually moved them up to the SKS, and now they all want to shoot the M14! That will come next spring when they're here for a week at a time. I just wish the pigs weren't so expensive to feed! The M14s, I mean.;) Thanks for your insights.
 
Who can afford to run a .308 rifle these days anyway?

A weekend of shooting with mine costs me five hundred bucks. It's either barely shoot, do nothing but shoot them and work to pay for it, or shoot something cheaper. I like to burn through at least a few thousand rounds a year on my guns and I just can't do it with .308 any more.

When the Norinco green box comes back I'll shoot M14s again.
