Has anyone ever tried tossing their BCG into their vibratory case cleaner, or their ultra sonic cleaner? Did it work? I've got a heavily fouled BCG and I'm tempted to drop it in my RCBS vibratory cleaner with walnut and corncob media. I also have an ultra sonic cleaner that I saved from the garbage. I'm wondering if that would work also.

I think your ultrasonic, if it is working, is a much better plan. I use my ultrasonic for cleaning gun parts all the time. I can't imagine using a vibratory case cleaner as it won't clean any internal cavities and you'd have to make sure you get all the media off and out of the parts.

I would stay away from the vibratory cleaner. The media will get in every nook & cranny & it will be a pain to clean out. The oil on the BCG will also contaminate the media. The ultrasonic should work better but may still not remove any really baked on crud. Since it's a pretty simple task I would disassemble the BCG into its components (don't remove the gas rings) and go the brake cleaner route or even soak it in lacquer thinner & then give it a good scrub with a stiff toothbrush. Since there are no plastic parts on the BCG these solvents won't hurt anything. The solvents will remove any trace of oil or grease so make sure to generously relube the BCG after cleaning.

Break free is highly toxic, (not sissy-I-wear-a-helmet-on-my-bike toxic, I mean really really toxic), I would dump it for 30 mns in acetone.
Do you mean brake cleaner? There's no notification of Break Free CLP bottles to use skin protection. A google search for Ed's Red solvent suggests it's obviously toxic based on the nasty stuff you have to pour into the vodoo pot to make it.

Yeah - I don't think he means break free CLP - see below (its not rated as toxic)

Skin histopathology of Break-Free CLP-treated animals closely matched the histopathology from mice treated repeatedly with 2% croton oil in acetone (dermal irritation positive control). Serum alkaline phosphatase activity was significantly (P < 0.05) lower for mice treated with Break-Free CLP, 2% croton oil or 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) compared with negative and vehicle control mice. Skin nitric oxide (NO) levels were not significantly elevated for mice treated with Break-Free CLP

yes i use my tumbler once in a while to clean gun parts.

dry tumbler is perfect for mags. Just dont add the polish and wipe off the dust after you're done

Break cleaner if necessary...

Although... Me thinks some guys are overly concerned about gun cleanliness...
If it stoops working... Clean it.
Otherwise.. Shoot it like you rented it...!!!

Agreed.
I had the pleasure of talking with the Captain of German Army's Rifle Team to AFSAM in Arkansas in '96. I'm not sure why they had M16s - but they did. And they were new. He asked me, since Canada had been winning just about everything and obviously we knew a trick or two about C7s...."can you show me the tricks to maintaining this rifle?"

I told him: "Sure - pull the barrel through once a day whether it needs it or not. Wipe the BCG and bolt face. Put a couple drops of oil in the little holes on teh side so the gas rings get it. Not too much, though. ANd DON'T OVERDO THE CLEANING - these guns work better when thery're dirty."

His reply -"But..... that is not very German." (I later watched him use his ironman watch to time a teabag in the mess.... wow! Seriously German. No wonder they make trains run on time)

All I could think to say to THAT was that maybe he could afford to take a few tips from the team that won the last two games....
