Here's an old timer converted from an 1897 rifle. The magazine is removable, but is single feed, of course. It has volley sights (?) Pics aren't the best.

Can anyone shed some light on this old girl?

Training rifle converted for the Royal Navy. Notice the 'N' for Naval Service stamped on the left butt socket metal. Sht 22 Mk.II is the model.

An official 'bitzer', it has a later model barrel (SMLE) with sights. The stock was hogged out in the barrel channel and a wooden liner glued in for the thinner barrel. the wood was bobbed in length and a new nosecap fitted. The volley sights are left over from the original long Lee.

Your mag looks to be a WWII cadet C No.7 type, which is just a loading platform and empty shell catcher.

Great little rifles, fun to shoot. They are getting to be quite collectible.

Thank you! I am presuming it started life as a full fledged boomer. Would it have been a Lee-Metford?

The "sundial thingy" is the front volley sight. Turn the arm until the pointer is aiming at the distance marking you want to fire at. Then, fold up the long peep sight on the left side of the receiver above the safety. Look through the peep sight and line up the knob on the front volley sight pointer with your target. You will probably find the rifle is at quite an angle. This is a left over from when it was a .303 service rifle and not used (as far as I have ever heard) for .22 shooting.
