Another Newbie question. How many piece's of wood on a LE #4 ??? I am thinking 4 ??? I am trying to locate enough wood to restore a #4 sporter but I don't want to tear it down until I have all the pieces.

You need a forend, a rear handguard, a front handguard, and ideally a matching butt. Then, a few metal bits:
- rear handguard retaining ring
- middle band, screw and swivel
- front band and screw
- rear swivel and screws (if missing from the sporterized donnor)
- Butt plate and screws (if missing too)
- You may need a new metal bushing under the front of the trigger guard, through which the king screw goes, if the one you have is too short for the new forend.

I think that's it?

"...restore a #4 sporter..." The bayonet lugs still there? If not, you'll need another barrel. And check the headspace before you spend any money.

The barrel has been shortened about 1 " and the The bayonet lug is still there. I think I will need a forend and the metal cap on the end. This is my first rifle resto So I maybe PM' ing Lou if you don't mind. Jack

No problem Jack, I sure don't mind! If the barrel has indeed been shortened it may be easier to keep this one sporterized and find an intact barreled action.

Lou

Thanks Lou !!! I'm not looking to make it a perfect resto. I just like the look of the #4 rifle and I'm likely to make it a sniper clone with a cheek rest and variable Leopold scope. Just a toy to fool around with :D I didn't realize that these rifles are so additive 1,2 and another on the way :D
