Because a comment of mine sparked a lot of commotion in another thread (http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=570124), I felt I owed it to that poster to make a thread for the people who feel compelled to argue about the markups on LE6920's.

Here is my comment that set it all off:
I've never understood why the colt le6920's are so expensive up in Canada. You can get them brand new for $1000 down here. Why 2.5x the price?

There is a challenge in the other thread to bring in the le6920 for under $2500. I would take it up, but being a poor college I don't have the money. Someone here should take the challenge :p

And lets please keep this one civil.

I'm just curious... can you please show me where I can source brand new COLT LE6920's for $1,000 in the US? The various US distributors we buy guns from sell COLT LE6920's for more than that price at wholesale not retail... and that's when they even have them in stock which they usually do not. I'm not saying what you say isn't true, I'm just asking to know who we could source them from at those prices.

Assuming we could get them, there's the problem of getting an export permit and during the past 5 years we've only been successful once or twice in getting permits approved for COLT LE model rifles. Every time we apply and get rejected it costs us money so it really doesn't make much sense doing so without an expectation of success and recovery of costs... but that's a whole other issue.

I think the challenge is $1500 and under; $2500 has been done already.

The idea that a private merchant shouldnt actually profit during a transaction, might have merit in like Cuba :rolleyes:, but up here I would hope that capitalism is still alive and well. :)

CDNN Sports in Abilene TX are selling them right now for $1000, while most other places are selling them for around $1100-$1200.

I realize that getting an export permit can be a real hassle, and it seems that some importers can get burned when trying to bring certain firearms in. Especially with customs and ITAR, and what seems to be a daily changing of importation/exportation rules. I am not knocking your business Mark, and I know you know the rules of importing/exporting firearms better then I will ever hope to know. In fact, I hope to purchase firearms from you when I return to Canada.
 
Did some Google searching and I can't find anyone selling them for $1,000.

I see a whole bunch available on GunBroker.com at prices varying from $1,200 to $1,799... but some have Reserves so you really don't know what their low end price point is set at.

There is one showing as a "Starting Bid" of $1,001.00 but it has a "Reserve" price which means that it can not be purchased at the $1,001 price you have to start at and the Buy Now price shown is $1,450 so that's a good indication of what the seller has set the reserve price near.

I'm not saying that someone in the US may not be in money trouble and unloading inventory at below cost... I'm just asking who that company is so we can talk to them about buying some guns at the $1,000 price point that's being claimed.

I heard that a few days ago and followed up on it but could not confirm with CDNN that they had them and could supply at that price point. They had other models of COLT rifles. I'll call them again tomorrow but I am skeptical.

The last flyer I got from them (I triple checked it) had other COLT rifles but no LE6920's.

I got an email from them on Jan. 26, where they listed the le6920 for $1099.99 (sorry, looks like I was off a bit). The product details are as follows:
Colt 6920 AR15 M4A3 LE Marked .223 16" M4 Barrel w/Bird Cage 2-20rd Mags
4-Position Collapsible Stock Quad Rail Hand Guard
Detachable Carry Handle Bayonet Lug New

Might just be a special, but they usually have those going for a few weeks, if they keep stock.

It was my understanding that getting an export permit approved for a rifle with a flash hider and collapsible stock was unlikely. Is that the case, Mark?

Is that their retail pricing or wholesale FFL Dealer price? Your original post suggested that LE6920's were being sold at retail by US Gun Stores for $1,000 which is NOT the case anywhere that I've seen. Wholesale on those guns is in the $1,100 (if that's what CDNN is quoting) to $1,300 range... which puts most gun store retail pricing in the US at $1,500 to $1,700 normally.

Even when we can get them we normally can't get export permit approval for those models. The laws of supply and demand do the rest. It's no different in the US... in fact it's much worse. Only in the US would you see a "transferable" machine gun that's only worth a couple thousand dollars (for an LE department or dealer sample) being sold "used" for $20,000 or $30,000 or even $60,000.00. Seen some ridiculous prices on some of these "transferrable" guns at some of the gun shows... and yet people buy them even at those prices.

Around $1500, even somewhere around the $1600 mark would be ok.

I figure if they're, oh let's say $1200 in the U.S., and you can import one for $200, it should be an easy $100 for the importer to bring one in, right? ;)

The dealers should make no money when importing rifles, what are we in, a free market or something! :confused:

It not a yes or no answer. It depends on a lot of factors. Some model guns are harder than others... some manufacturers are harder than others... some days are better than others... etc.

That's their retail price. I don't have an FFL so I don't see their dealer pricing.

Aye, I'll agree with that. Paying out of the ass is the western way. People need to make money, and we need our toys.
It always works out in the end, no matter how many ##### about the price.

Just the way it goes, unless you can make and market the firearm yourself. Imports will always cost more. Like beer, for example. Wouldn't expect it any different for Colt. Yes, I know there's Colt Canada. Look at MDG, that's made here in Canada as well but we still pay for it like an import/premium beer.

Understood. I was led to believe it was a hard and fast rule, but I know that there are few of those in import/export.

No, it's more than that.

The last time we tried Colt AR15s was for a "post ban" 223 marked model, not the 556NATO marked line, like the 6920. The receiver was rollmarked 223 as was the markings on the box(s), the other features were ok. But, they (DDTC) wanted pictures of the box, the rollmarks, including the barrel. In lieu of that they wanted a letter from Colt stating that the chamber was not 556NATO. The barrel was rollmarked 556 NATO. This killed the license. Literally. They cancelled it after issue.

We would have retailed them for under $1500, and this was when the dollar was weaker.

To exporting non-exportable firearms from the USA. Ask Guy Savage how that turns out.
