Anyone use a Wilson case trimmer and .45-70?

Got myself a "new" case holder. As I understand it, this would be for new brass and FL resized back to SAAMI spec.

When inserted the case will not protrude at all for trimming.

In the pics below, is new Starline brass, in addition to Hornady factory ammo.

I have also tried with FL resized Remington brass, no go.

Am I missing something? I've only ever trimmed bottleneck cases on this trimmer using the case holders, never straight walled.

The factory Hornady Leverevolution ammo in 45-70 has a shorter case than standard, so that is probably the issue with that one. No Idea what the issue would be with the R-p or Starline.

Yeah, I was aware the Hornady stuff is slightly shorter brass, but none of the brass protrudes at all.

Strange it's the same with all brass i've tried.

All, other than the virgin Starline brass, were FL resized in a Redding die.

Chuck it up in a lathe and cut the case holder back about 1/4", I had to do that on one of mine. There's still plenty of case holder left.

Can definitely do that.. just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something! Good to know I'm not the only one.

Maybe I should have specified, I cut the case holder for a wildcat cartridge I'm working on, not a factory case. I just thought my solution would work for you as well. Maybe your case holder slipped through QC??

Get out your calipers and check the actual length of the cases and the case holder so you can compare to the actual specifications.

45-70 is 2.1" so trim length would be 5-10 thousands less depending on your chamber.

Currently, my new virgin Starline brass is at 2.1005 and my previously fired and FL sized Remington cases are at 2.1015.

The issue here is that the holder is nowhere near spec to allow the cases to protrude for trimming. They would have to lengthen by at least 0.11 to even make it the the very edge of the shell holder and even then I wouldn’t be able to trim.

From LE Wilson site:

The FIRED Case Holders are for Neck Sized Cases.
If we DO NOT make a "New Case" holder for your caliber this will be all you need, we refer to these as Standard Fired Holders
For example: we only make ONE holder for the 222/223 Remington. This will work for all Fired / New and Full Length Resized Brass

Don’t think you’re missing anything.

Just a quick update on this one.

I contacted LE Wilson. They didn’t hesitate to send me a “special” case holder (with express shipping) that works great. Not sure what the modified stamp entails, but it’s perfect.

They are right up there with some of the other companies that are top of their class for customer service and standing behind their products.
