lead bullet indoor ranges

Not sure. I have shot a bit of copper FMJ 7.62x39 at indoor ranges without issues. I was not allowed to shoot steel jacketed however. The rule seemed to be if your ammo was magnetic, you could not use it.

At another range I can only shoot handguns and rifles in handgun calibers.

Guess everyone buys a different sized lump of steel.

Its not the actual jacket, but more the amount of lead that is emited into the air after each shot. Lead bullets are VERY dirty compared to jacketed, and at indoor matches the extra contamination can really add up after a few thousand bullets. It's a health thing...

The fact is, there is a lot of confusion and non scientific decisions on what is allowed and what is not.. you have some clubs that want jacketed, and some that don't. some say it's more lead with jacketed, some say jacketed only since it's less lead..

Confusing Question

I know what your saying one range I visited said only lead bullets as their backstop wouldn't handle Jacketed, The lead bullets I wanted to shoot are 100% linotype and according to marcel extremely hard much harder than jacketed . Why would a copper jacket surrounding a soft lead core be harder on the backstop???

Some times things are confussing

in many cases it is the old Canadian military standard. many ranges were built for cadets and had to meet that standard so they just adopted their rules. however if you do any research on the subject you will find that the type of bullet has little to do with damaging the back stop.

Unless it is old milsurp. Steel core can create swiss cheese out of indoor ranges (let alone hanging/swinging targets @ outdoor). Unless you have more modern versions (better sloping, modern retention methods and impact surfaces) most places keep with the old standards as was mentioned before. Otherwise it varies from club to club.

How much does it cost to upgrade the steel to shoot jacketed?
Or is there other reasons why a club would not upgrade, money.......

Colby in Waterloo allows anything upto 3600 fps. Lead is just dirty so we discourage it there.
