I am going to start reloading 7.62x54r ammo for my Mosin M91/30. I was wondering if using cast lead bullets is any good, ( accuracy, barrel effects, and so on). At the gun shop here he said he would cast me 500 projectiles for $33.00. He's in need of lead and I have 200 pounds of wheel weights. I assume they could be melted down and molded. Should I go with commercial bullets or just use lead ones?? I'm mostly just gonna use the ammo for target shooting but I am probably going to make a few hunting rounds (20) and just put them away but would like to find a cheaper way to make a bunch of target rounds.
Any advice will be appricated. Thanks, Blake

Cast bullets are just the ticket for the Russian unless you want to load to the top velocities as cast bullets aren't usually most accurate at their top speeds. I think you should find out about what bullet he will make you and if it is the right size, weight, design. Will they be sized and lubed? If everything sounds good...make him a deal for the lead as you have over $50 worth of wheel weights. Also find out if the cast bullets are Gas Check design and if they are(they should be for the Russian), will he install the gascheck as part of the deal. PM me if you have any concerns as I am a Commercial bullet maker and can probably answer any of your concerns.

M.T. Chambers makes all kinds of bullets for common and oddball cals. incl. bullets for the .43 Mauser and .450/577(you should slug this bore), heavyweight bullets for Handguns, and bigbore hunting applications, all the Sharps cals., need a 595gr. paper patch bullet for your .45 cal. rifle? It's in the lineup.

Accuracy with cast bullets in a Mosin Nagant can range from excellent to terrible. It all depends on how well the bullets fit the chamber throat and the barrel. I've had good luck with cast lead in various 7.62x54R rifles, sized between .311 and .314.

I can't imagine that those bullets will be gas checked for $33 - that would use half a box of gas checks and those are around $30 a thousand. You are going to need gas checks for decent accuracy in this caliber.
