I just picked up a copy of the 2006 Migratory Bird Regs for Ontario and they state that lead shot is not required for Woodcock, Band-tailed Pigeons, and Mourning Doves.

Pigeons and Doves are not on the endangered spicies list and are classed as migratory birds. There are seasons for them in other Provinces and the United States so why can't we hunt them in Ontario.

We "raise them" on our agricultural lands here, so they can run the gauntlet through the States where it's legal to harvest them.

The lack of an open season is likely a political holdover, somehow
connected in the minds of some with the extirpation of the
Passenger Pigeon.

Hunted Mourning Doves & White-winged Doves in Cuba... lots of fun & very tasty !

THE summary(Migratory birds hunting regs 2006) states that non-toxic shot shall be used....except for woodcock, band tailed pidgeons and mourning doves.
You CAN use lead shot to hunt them!
You can hunt grouse, crows, red wing black birds, sparrows pidgeons and some of the other course birds. Consult on line or with the local MNR and they will give you a complete list of birds that you can also hunt, with lead, that are basically non-migratory ,and other course birds that are or not migratory, but are not classed as game birds(migratory)
Good hunting and enjoy the upcoming season

Sorry Sgtrock.. here is the direct quote from the MNR web site (link in previous post)

" Hunt Lead-free

Effective September 1, 1999, the use of lead shot was banned nationally for migratory game bird hunting except when hunting Woodcock. In Ontario you can not hunt Band-tailed Pigeons or Mourning Doves."

Granted lead shot can be used for many types of upland birds and game however there is no season in Ontario for the Band-tailed Pigeons or Morning Doves.

Which is the point of my question... does anyone know why?

Just curious

Quote was from Enviroment Canada web-site (link in previouse post). They (Enviroment Canada ) also state in 2006 summary(provided to all hunters getting their 2006 duck stamp to hunt migratory game birds) "Non toxic shot must be used in ALL areas of Canada to hunt migratory game birds EXCEPT for woodcock,Band-tailed Pidgeons, and Mourning doves"
Seems like the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. They are helping a normally confusing situation regarding clarity of hunting regulations only get more confusing.
On a side note the Ferral Rock Dove(BARN PIDGEON) can be hunted as a course bird and is quite tasty
