Lead tank??

Has anyone ever come across a lead tank. I have a chunk of lead which looks like it came from a cylindrical tank. It has a nipple and a plug welded to the outside. It came as a hunk so there is no top or bottom.

It seems very soft. When I Schmelted it, it seem to produce a lot of dross/impurities. The ingots ended up looking like they have a white haze to them.

Anybody ever came across anything like this??

I also found that (I think) I have gotten some pure tin ingots. I had always assumed that they were pewter, but today I threw them in the hardness tester and the result was less than 8bhn (the lowest the Lee hardness tester will go).

What diameter was it? If around 5" or so I'm betting it was shielding for cable or phone lines. I see them downtown alot with nipple on them, but I don't what they would be for.

Bell used to have their 3000 pair lines wrapped in lead, it was 4-5" tubing. The nipple on it was to pump in a gas to help locate leaks because the 3000 pairs were all paper wrapped and any moisture getting in caused havoc. Even better than the wrap is the pressure vessels that smelted down to just over 120 pound of lead. Unfortunately it is hard to get the lead from Bell these days.
