Chisholms Trail Leather

After talking to the proprietor, I ordered two rifle cartridge belt slides - one in 45-70, the other in 50-70.
I'll be using these in hunting, not CAS.

I presumed that the one for 50-70 would hold 5 rds instead of 6 due to the larger diameter, but no. He cuts them to size for calibre.

I thought real hard about ordering one of his Sambar stage Bowies, Hell of a deal at the price!
But not being a frontier knife fighter, I rarely wear a large knife as I've yet to find a use for one. My hunting knives are a folding Kershaw with a 3" blade and a Green River Forge (came with my .50 Astorian) stag handle 'patch knife' with a 3 1/4" blade.
These have handled all the deer, bear and moose I've put down. Getting inside a body cavity with a large knife is a sure fire way for me to add my blood to that of the animal.

On my CAS belt, I'm packing ammo, two holsters, a shotgun belt slide - ain't no room for a Bowie! 'Sides, takin' a knife to a gun fight? - uh, uh!

I just noticed, yesterday, an old photo of some Texas Rangers shown in R.L. Wilson's Winchester, An American Legend page 72. 6 out of the 14 rangers are packing a knife in a sheath on their gunbelt, all worn forward of the gun. Several, even some standing, seem to be wearing their sixgun on the front, protecting the family jewels, so-to-speak. The Sambar bowie he made me has a 6 & 1/8" blade. I've cleaned deer and cattle with both small and large knives, and still can't figure out which I prefer. However, the same knife has to do me for skinning big fish when in the wilderness (where a long blade is handy) and a last resort of a Cougar lands on my head and I don't have my gun handy for some reason (where a 6" blade is handier than a 3 & 1/2" blade).
 
Yep give me the 6 inch + blade any day!
Cougars attack from behind and a gun even a hand gun could be awkward to use with a cougar on your back.

The knifes always there on the belt!
Tho and Older fellow on Vancouver Island Killed a cougar that jumped him with a Folder, It was a small sickly Cougar but still any Knifes better than NO knife.
I have a Puma white hunter and now this Custom Damascus 9 inch blade knife!
I made the Sheath myself!

No argument from me guys - whatever you think you need.

I'm a bare ass hunter on foot and cover a lot of ground. I think in terms of ounces, not pounds. A large knife is an encumbrance to me, not an essential.

It it was big enough to split wood and drive tent pegs, I'd be better off with a hatchet. Just MHO .....

I'm willing to risk a cougar attack. I've had the experience of being tracked and followed by one. Saw his tracks as I rounded a corner on x-country skis.
He had been parallelling me and crossed the trail just ahead of me.

According to the local cougar hunter/guide, the cat was just curious. A healthy cat is after deer and a skier doesn't fit that description.

If cougar hunters knew this much about what individual cougars thought based on some tracks in the snow there would be no cats left!

Cougars are hunting for opportunity. If you'd skied under the snag he set himself up in you'd be opportunity just the same as a deer, hare, etc.

I wear an alice pack with the top pouch well stuffed with light stuff, covers that cougar biting spot at the base of the neck. I keep an eye out for bears and bear sign and avoid places that put me in potential bear conflict but for cougars I just hope that it misses the spine on the first bite, cause that bite is the first you'll know about em.

I had a chance to see a cougar cross a road in daylight this fall and all I can say is they effortlessly jump farther then you can see in bush that is easy to walk through.i.e like they had friggin wings!

Dingus you gotta get more of those damascus knives!
 
Thanks Win but I was refering to my 42inch girth though if my wife and the doc have their way it will be coming down so maybe I"ll wait to order.I might have to have one of those knives and sheath though.

That was my cougar hunting pal's point - the cougar didn't want me. The incident I referred to occurred in an area with 50kms of groomed trails. The cat could have run me into the ground easily on the hard packed snow.

The entire area is deer habitat and ranching country. Big cats avoid humans like the plague.
South of us, we lost a lady on horseback when a sick 90 lb. cat jumped her and her two kids. She pulled the cat off one of the kids but succumbed to her wounds.
Her 30-30 was at home because she hadn't yet renewed her hunting licence.

I told my cougar hunter pal that periodically I'd get the feeling of being 'watched' when out skiing or hunting that kind of terrain. He smiled and said - "You were ...".

Where I live now, it's big 'dogs' (wolves) tracks I see, in packs. The animals themselves keep a pretty low profile.
