Leather gun case, bought in Mexico cheap! What ya think?

I'm leaving Mexican as we speak. I saw some of these in a leather shop, but.not as nice as those. Great deal

Yeah, the fellow who worked the craft hut at the resort said his father made them and showed me a few more pictures of other cases, and pistol belts. The resort was Secrets Huatulco. Said his father could make anything out of leather.

There is a booming trade in these in the resort areas, and in particular they are VERY common in the Yucatan. The motif on the case's lid is the ##### perpetual calendar.

Last time in the Mayan a feller at the resort was pitching those, his price was around the $100 USD, which at the time wasn't much more than that in CAD. Didn't get one, but they are certainly nice.

I seen one last year at the Gun Show in Perth and took pics. I thought it was absolutely beautiful. I was thinking of trying my hand at one, but then got to thinking wow, how many hours is put into that with all the detail. Even for me to make one with not as much detail as it has would still be a pretty little penny. Thinking it would have to go for minimum of $300-$350. It was made of really good sturdy leather. The guy at the Gun Show said he got it for a steal. Paid about $85 for it.

I once bought a similar leather gun case in Mexico and it was crap.
Be careful how you handle it, or the lining will come out, before you get a rifle in it.
I virtually got no use out of mine, until I just junked it.

Quite a few years ago my neighbour was visiting his brother who lived in McAllen, Tx. While there he took a trip across the border. My neighbour isn't a gun guy but he picked up two cases, one for a short rifle and one for a pistol, both of which he gave me. While new they both looked good with hand tooling. In time the good (smooth) side of the leather started to deteriorate and in time came completely apart. I have no idea what he paid for them but suspect it wasn't too high. What the OP has appear to be of higher quality than what I had but I would wait a few years before deciding whether the quality is there.

Not trying to rain on any one's parade and I realize my experience relates to only two pieces of leather.

Sorry to burst the OP's bubble but this is terrible leather work. Post this on one of the leather work sites I go to and you'd be laughed off the site. Anyone want to see excellence in tooling leather google Bob Parker known as Hidepounder one of the best.
