I had always heard that heavy clothing like a leather jacket could affaect how a JHP bullet performs terminally. I just happened to have an old leather jacket hanging around so we decided to do a bit of testing to see if there was any validity to this idea. All the rounds tested were 9mm 147gr JHP.
The images below show the round fired through the leather jacket and into wet phonebook on the left and the same round fired only into wet phonebook on the right
Gold Dot
Hydra Shock
Winchester Bulk
Golden Sabre
We actually tested several other bullets but had some challenges when two collided in the test media and the Black Talon was completely destroyed for some reason we weren't able to discern.
As can be plainly seen heavy clothing does have a major effect on the terminal performance of modern JHP bullets. Decreased expansion did result in a slilght increase in penetration.
The Golden Sabre was the only bullet not to be affected, which was what it was specifically designed to do so kudos to Remington, the thing works as advertised.
