This morning I got up and headed toward Kirkland Lake, ON for work. I through my .35 Whelen pump under the back seat of the truck because I wanted to try a few shots at a pit at lunch time. I'm going deer hunting next week and I wanted to make extra sure everything still worked the way it's supposed to. I was about 15 minutes from home and driving past a long pole line and I thought I spotted something black just inside the tree line about 400 yards down the pole line. I continued on down the highway and while I was driving I thought of this little road coming up ahead that goes straight to that pole line. I thought, "What the heck" and turned off the highway to go and have a little look see. Just as I'm pulling up the the pole line, a cow and calf jump out 30 feet in front of my truck. I slammed on the brakes and threw the truck and park. I jumped out and opened the back door, grabbed my gun case from under the back seat, unzipped it, pulled out the rifle. Then I dug through my bag for a box of cartridges and dumped them out on the drivers seat. I grabbed one cartridge and dropped it in the chamber and closed the action. I ran in front of the truck and I could just see the cow with the calf behind her just inside the tree line. I clicked the safety off and put the crosshairs behind the front shoulder of the calf. "Bang", I said to myself and put the safety back on.
We have just returned from a moose hunting trip where we got 4 moose for 7 guys. That's more meat than I'll be able to eat as it is. I watched and the cow suddenly walked back out into the open with the calf behind her.
I grabbed my camera as they started walking back to the same side of the pole line that I was on. I snapped a couple of photos and let them go. I had my calf tag in my pocket and everything and they were only about 80 yards in front of me.
It felt good to let them go. That calf was lucky enough to make it this far with all the bears around. I didn't need to shoot it, just to give it away to someone else.
