Leaving a radio on a big game carcase overnight?

There are radio stations in hunting country? All kidding aside Grizzlies won't care, they routinely check out our camps at night with us in them, just two weeks ago one was thirty yards from the tent. We piss around camp, etc, doesn't matter if they want it, it's theirs. Just get it out quickly as you can.

Yep, Bears learn quick...humans and gunshots= FREE meal.

Really smart idea leaving a radio! A disco ball in a nearby tree might also help :)

I can just image another hunter coming across that sight!

I have never had an animal touched when leaving a worn T-shirt on the animal. Yes bears and wolves are smart, so smart I think they think they are being baited when they smell your shirt. I'm sure if it was left for a few days they would figure things out. But for a short period it has always worked for me.

I had a black bear wake us up in the middle of the night trying to pull moose quarters off the meat poles that are mounted in the back of the trailer we were sleeping in. It's a 20' car hauler with the rear 5' converted into a cooler. It was a cold night so we left the rear door down.
Three of us snoring right beside it and guys have been pissing around the site for a week didn't deter him.
Even after chasing him off he kept coming back every night untill we left.

Exactly.

How can anyone think that a shirt or a radio would work (and even if it did seem to work once, to think the shirt was the reason and always do the same thereafter is called "superstition") if that has happened to so many people so many times. Human smell will not stop a bear from doing his bear thing if he decides to do it. This forum has dozens of threads talking about how bears and wolves are so dangerous we must constantly fear them whenever we walk off a sidewalk, yet people think a smelly shirt will scare them off? Really? No more need for bear defence threads - just wear a smelly shirt or carry a radio. Obviously there is no need to worry about the "dinner bell" effect of gun shots if you're still standing there in your smelly shirt and talking with your buddies about CBC stuff. Obviously.

A gutted animal is always lying in a pool of human scent. If nothing touches it overnight, consider yourself fortunate. If something eats it, consider yourself unlucky.

I seen some interesting things this season.

I found a poached elk. I heard shot Thursday evening. Found next morning @ 9 a.m. Skeleton was still there but pretty much picked clean of meat. Hide was laying there. I reported to C.Os. they came out and had a look. We got there around 12ish and hide was drug away in bush. We found kill site across a flood and in towards farmland nothing left of gutpile except stench.

So in less than 16 hours carcass and gutpile picked clean.

Flip side.

Same general area(less than a mile) I found an Elk kill(archery) along creek . There was tag at site on hide. So I was able to date it as 3 days old. They did gutless method so skelton was there. Funny thing is alot of internal organs were still present. Ravens were on the carcass but no coyotes, wolves or bears had been there?

So it all depends....?

Everything depends ..... if there are no bears near, then there are no bears near ... plus they prefer rotting meat.

Bears are definitely less shy than wolves. A t-shirt will most likely keep wolves away and bears .... will be bears .... sometimes they need to hear a shotgun blast to be scared of humans and sometimes, they might need to feel the shotgun blast .... I’ve found that having a black bear tag seems to keep them away, I never see one, if I have a tag ..... somehow they can tell, if you have one in your pocket lol.

Leaving a radio on is better than nothing for sure. Will work 100% of the time, doesn't sound like it but will it work for that one evening that you need to leave the animal overnight in the bush, it might... I don't see a downside to leaving a radio on overnight....
