Sensible non-liberals would never go....just about anywhere in California. Actually same with Edmonton in my opinion, where you are from.
There are many absolutely wonderful areas to live in the USA though.

We know a couple with two teenage children right now living in S. California. Only went because the wife got offered a job with Apple. Even with a salary of $350,000 US (over half a million Communist dollars), they are barely getting by. Can't save any money as the cost of living is so stupidly high there. Husband is home schooling the children to prevent left wing nuttism from being planted in their little heads in a government run school.

Wife is enjoying the job, but husband is miserable. He wants to either move to a free state or even come back to rural Ontario. Far from a big city and all the problems they cause.

Spent a lot of time in California. Never had to visit Berkeley. You can live comfortably in Southern California on that. Someone has no clue...
