I was loading 115gr with Tightgroup and using the .34 hole on the A disk.

Now, I want to load some 147gr and with Tightgroup, I would need to get the Micro Disk to go down as Lymans manual recommend a starting load of 3.2gr and a top load of 3.6gr. The smallest hole I have on the A disk is .30 and with Tighgroup I am still getting 4.1gr (measured), well over the max for this load.

I don't want to bother getting the Micro Disk right now, so I am looking for suggestions on a powder that requires a higher volume and, more specifically, will preform well in the Lee autodisk.

Some choices are:

Power Pistol
HS-6
Blue Dot
N340

I am only asking becuase the Lee Auto Disk instructions caution that coarse flake powders (like Green Dot and Red Dot) can give light charges or not fill the disk consistantly, and I only have experience with Tightgroup.

Any suggestions are welcome..

Thanks!

BT

My .30 AutoDisk drops me 3.5Gr TG giving me 930FPS over at 147GR CMJ RN bullet.

Higher volume? I used HS-6 with good results. .37 disk gave me 5.2Gr for 960FPS at 20C and 888 at 0C, respectively.

What are you measuring with? The less scale or a good digital?

I'd just get the micro-disk (mine worked well), but since you want to get powder instead, HS-6 flows like water and has the least weight variance of any powder I've measured in a throw.

TG is a "modified ball" that flows well; the Lee suggestion to avoid flake powders is a good one. I have tried Blue Dot - and it doesn't flow well in a progressive, especially poorly in the Lee system.

Are you sure you have your scale set right?? I've used the auto disk pretty much exclusively since I started reloading, and I can't see the .30 disc throwing that much Titegroup. Being .5 grain over is quite a bit.

Make sure the disc is hooked in its right slot, and if you are using the riser piece(to clear the safety prime when the turret spins) make sure it is spun in all the way.

To anyone who hasn't done this yet, it will pull the disc over the dump hole, but not all the way. Then your next load has the extra powder that was hanging up.

Also, my discs seem to drop .1-.2 less than stated....

Blue Dot measures much better than the other dots 'cause it's denser and heavier.

The Dots definitely aren't the best choice for the Auto Disk measure, but they do work reasonably well if you tap the disk a couple of times before pulling the handle. I use all three with good results.

Just thought I'd update this thread for reference.

I grabbed a pound of Blue Dot and started with the Lee suggested setup, which is 5.3 grains using the .46 hole on the auto disk.

I weighed this on an RCBS scale and found it to be way off (under measure).

I am now using the .49 hole and am getting 5.4 grains VERY consistently with the Blue Dot.

Thanks for everyone's input!
