i just finsihed loading up some .40 cal with the lee turret and instead of using the auto disk i just dipped each load with the lee dipper issued with the dies.( .5) My question is, i am using is Unique powder and is quite large flake so instead of scraping off the excess powder from the top of the scoop i just tapped it and leveled the top that way. Is that suitable? was thinking after, i hope by tapping the scoop im not making the powder "settle" inside the scoop and allowing more powder to fit inside and increasing the charge. Am i putting too much thought into this?? thanks!

ok...its just that the scale i got with the lee turret kit doesent seem that accurate. Im sure that the .5 scoop is on the low end of the load anyhow. it says never exceed 5.5 with this receipe anyhow. Is that grains?

NEVER tap,or settle a Lee dipper in any way. Fill the dipper in a way that the powder falls into it. Then wipe off the excess with a playing card. You will find that the dippers throw amazingly accurate powder charges if used that way. 5.5 will be grains. 5.5 grains of unique is a hefty charge in the .40....

cheers Darryl

You need to weigh how much powder that scoop throws. (in grains.) the size of each scoop is in cc (cubic centimeters) The most important tool of any reloader is an accurate scale.

You said you doubt the scale. Is there a reason for that other than the cheap looks of the thing?

Weigh a few jacketed bullets and see for yourself how accurate it is. Don't bet your eyes on an assumption that it's no good.

If it truly is inaccurate, get a decent scale, the cast brand name balance types eg RCBS Lyman etc are not expensive, and are accurate.

well i experimented...even when i try to overload the dipper i cant seem to get more than 4.5 grains of unique on the scale. i should be safe then. the unique is hard to skim off the excess because its so coarse.

ok...heres the results..as much as i fill, tap and shake the most i can fit into the .5 dipper to the top is 4.6 grains. You definatley can get more in if you get it to settle in there...good lesson for the new loader...

I use the dippers to get me close to my load and trickle the rest in. If you want 5 grains dump a scoop in the scale pan and trickle thev rest to get 5 grains.
