Lee Enfield #1 mk5

QUOTE: "
BTW no No1 MkVIs were converted to sniper rifles because of the low wall to the left side of the receiver, it was the trials No4 Mk1s that were converted."

You are right. It was the No.4 Mk.1 Trials rifles that were converted. MY mistake on that one - at 73 I will plead my case that my memory does not retain the information it once did. I should have checked the reference books.

Good to see there is at least one in captivity in Canada.

I see a welded eye to the FNC and a woodscrew attaching it to the display case. Philistines! Considering even fewer of those have Canadian Forces lineage, you'd think the curators would be more careful (oh sorry, they are hard working volunteers/underpaid professionals and can't do everything to our satisfaction).

I would not have thought they are all that rare. As I recall International Firearms (In Montreal, as I recall) was selling them in the 1970's or early 80's. I believe that is where I purchased my first one. I purchased my second one for $40.00 at a gun show from a dealer who thought it was a Mk III. Both of mine were sold into Canadian collections.

5TH, why was the nomenclature different for MkV? Instead of being No1 MkV?

From Skennertons book.
"although a pattern was sealed to govern production, the MarkV was not officially approved, announced or introduced in the List of Changes"

Pretty much did not exist on the books when the changes to the nomenclature were introduced in to the LoC in 1926 so never got the No1 designation.
