The reason the magazine is chained to the action. Note this is before charger guides so you couldn't easily strip five and 10 rounds into the rifle. The ammo had to be loaded one round at a time.
A Spare loaded magazine was carried in a leather pouch. If the enemy, especialy cavalry got close, you would drop the empty magazine and load a fresh one. The chain was there so you wouldn't lose the empty mag.
