Lee Enfield #1Mk 1 1896

Another shot in the dark, but are you talking about putting an action cover on and then sliding a web case over the rifle with the action cover installed?

Or maybe a bayonet and then scabbard?

IMO it would be a mistake to rebarrel a Canadian Boer War rifle like that. It is a museum piece in original condition and should be left so.

The reason the magazine is chained to the action. Note this is before charger guides so you couldn't easily strip five and 10 rounds into the rifle. The ammo had to be loaded one round at a time.
A Spare loaded magazine was carried in a leather pouch. If the enemy, especialy cavalry got close, you would drop the empty magazine and load a fresh one. The chain was there so you wouldn't lose the empty mag.

The spare magazines were a very short lived thing, they were ordered to be returned to stores (June 1890) within a couple of years after the introduction of the Mk1 MLM & really just a footnote in the history of the Lee.

oh my..... you only did this if ordered to do so by the officers.

can't have a squaddie just shooting all willy nilly and wasting ammo ;)
