I heard there were 20 round trench mags made. Does anyone know if this is true? If it is true were can a guy get one or could one get one made legally?

There were some made in limited numbers.
The idea was dropped because there was no point. There was no advantage to justify the increased weight and awkwardness.

AFAIK such a mag would be a prohibited device unless pinned to 10 rounds. Lee-Enfield mags are specifically named in the law as limited to 10 rounds. Rumor has it that this has to do with the F/A and/or S/A prototype conversions that were done back in ww1.

It was developed for bolt action rifles, not the experimental conversions. But it was abandonned as not being worthwhile. IIRC the intent was to allow 20 rounds to be fired without having to reload in muddy conditions.

i have a m1 grand semi auto with a 20 nround clip and it is so quiet, but its pinned at 5 rounds plus one in the chamber

The M1 Garand uses a 8 round en-bloc clip that cannot be pinned and it is specifically exempted from the 5 round limit. Perhaps you are thinking of an M14 which has a 20 round magazine that is pinned to 5 rounds.

Rob Smith: If you found a 200 round feed device designed for use in Lee Enfield rifles, it would be legal. Bolt action rifles have no limit to their magazine capacity. That it was named, in the same figurative breath, as the M1's clips is irrelevant.

I have always wanted to know the answer to this question, but whenever i bring it up, i get the same kind of back and forth, with no consensus... :runaway:

The 20 round mags were made for the No.1 Mk3 are ridiculously rare. If you do find one, prepare to pay out of every orifice for it. You are better off going on Ebay or the EE and getting some stripper clips. they run around $1 each, and are fun to use.

One of the board members stated he was up north on a CF-Ranger op, and one of the Rangers had one of the 20 rounders on his Enfield.
I forget who it was but it wasn't that long ago it was posted.

I had a couple of pics of the big mags but now can't find them.

That mag looks awesome!

Just to add my IIC...it is correct that lever action, pump and bolt action centre fire do not have magazine capacity restrictions UNLESS the magazine used has been adapted from a magazine designed to be used in a semi-auto. In other words if you use an M14/M1A magazine and fit it to work in a Lee-Enfield, it technically will still be limited to 5 rounds.

If you build a 20 round magazine designed to work only in the Lee-Enfield, you are good to go. Wouldn't that be friggin awesome!!:D

This is where we ran into trouble with the Remington 7615. If they had designed a magazine that only fit the 7615, it could have been a 20 or 30 round mag. But they designed it to use commonly available AR magazines, which limited it to 5 or 10 with the LAR-15 mags.

The rifle shown in the posted photo is an experimental in 7.62 rifle. The WWI .303 experimental magazine is different. In addition to being .303, it is slightly curved.
Read the magazine control regulations very, very carefully. It is possible to interpret them in different ways, with respect to Lee Enfield magazines.
